What are some stereotypes about Brown students?

That we're super-hippy and liberal, or that we're very adventurous.

Brown is the "cool Ivy," where there are no requirements.

Are the stereotypes accurate?

There isn't that much activism, but Brown is a hard place to be if you're Republican.

Brown is, in fact, the cool Ivy. People are really laid back, but you still have to pass classes and major in something.

Brown Academic Life

Favorite Classes:
The Social History of Early Modern Japan wit the guy who did the research and wrote the book.
Art and Engagement with a preeminent Woodblock Print Scholar -- we went on a silent Zen Meditation Retreat.

Students work a lot but its very non-competitive - nobody talks about grades (almost) and study parties are the norm. How much time you spend with profs is hugely dependent on you and on the specific professor.

Don't come here if you're not ready to be adventurous and careful in setting your own course -- the advising sucks, so take the bull by the horns.

Brown's Student Body

Brown is generally very socially liberal. Racial mixing is like it was in high school - those who hung out with only their own ethnicity before will still do so, those who hung out with everyone will do so still.

All groups are here, but Jews and Rhode Islanders are overrepresented.

Brown is very liberal. Being gay is generally a non-issue, but being a Republican -- look out.

Brown Student Activities + Social Life

My main involvement at Brown was with the Alpha Delta Phi society, a coed literary Greek organization. We have tea parties weekly, and charity auctions to support literacy .

Everything closes at 2AM by law, which totally blows.

Some people party more than others. Its not the only way to be involved in Social life. You can be a social person at Brown and still go to bed at midnight.

Brown Naked Truth

The food sucks. Seriously, come to Brown.

In Closing ...

What's the worst thing about Brown?
The food sucks, and everything closes at 2AM

What's the best thing about Brown?
The students are smart and interesting, and its a great place to be gay.
