Claremont McKenna: The Big Picture
The big picture about CMC is that it is academically a very good school, without a lot of name recognition. However, those who need to know about CMC always do. For example the average American on the street has never heard of CMC in the same way that Harvard or Princeton have a lot of name recognition. But people who work in investment firms and graduate schools all have heard of CMC and give it the respect it deserves. There is a tremendous amount of school pride/spirit when it comes to us versus Pomona and that is one of the best reasons about going to CMC.
Claremont McKenna Academic Life
Class sizes are very small, and the professors are amazing. Class participation is ubiquitous and everyone has an opinion about everything. The education at CMC is very geared for getting an internship (junior summer) and job (after graduation). The econ department at cmc is definitely one of the best in the nation if not the best.
Claremont McKenna's Student Body
The student body at cmc is somewhat conservative. Overall it is liberal, but for a liberal arts campus cmc is definitely relatively conservative. Most of the cmc students are from western states in particular California, Washington, and Colorado, but there are kids from all over. In general all of the students come from afluent families and have no problems with spending money. That being said, there are still plenty of kids from all sorts of backgrounds, and it is the case that at most small private schools the kids are afluent.
Claremont McKenna Student Activities + Social Life
The social scene at cmc is amazing. People party constantly, every night of the week. Kids also study every night of the week. We work hard and play hard and that is what is so amazing. There are no frats/sororities but the sports teams are close to that. I play on the lacrosse team and we party with eachother the same way a frat does, but we also hang with other kids. There are never parties where certain kids cannot go as is the case with schools with frats. There are plenty of things to do for kids who do not want to drink because it is LA, but if you are against partying you may not enjoy cmc as much. It is a very wet campus.
