Colleges in New York offer rich and diverse educational options with over 145 public and private universities in both urban and rural settings. Notably, two of the eight Ivy League universities are located here, Columbia and Cornell. Universities in New York City itself offer the social and cultural resources of the entire city. New York University is the largest university in the state with 51,000 enrolled students and is strong in a variety of subjects.

The public New York State Colleges include The State University of New York (SUNY) and the City College of New York (CUNY). These SUNY schools compromise the largest post-secondary educational system in the world. These schools are varied and include public colleges, technical schools and community colleges such as the well respected Binghamton, Geneseo, Hunter and Brooklyn College.
