North Carolina has a rich educational history and opened the first public university in the country, the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill. The state is also home to over 200 colleges and universities. UNC has the second largest student body of any college in North Carolina, the first being North Carolina State. UNC also has a fierce and famous basketball rivalry with other North Carolina college, Duke University. Duke University private and is competitive and prestigious. Another well-known college in North Carolina is Wake Forest University.
Winston-Salem State and North Carolina A & T State University are also notable and are historically black colleges. There are also 60 plus community colleges that operate as part of the North Carolina Community College system including Central Piedmont College, the largest in the state.
