Colleges in Maine

Offering coastal scenery and the charm of New England, Maine is a picturesque state with over 50 public and private colleges and universities, many of which are the best in the US. The public University of Maine system has nine universities, including the University of Maine–Fort Kent and University of Southern Maine-Portland, which are two of the highest ranked colleges both statewide and in the Northeast. UMaine-Orono has the largest enrollment of any college in the state and is considered the flagship institution in the system of colleges.

There are prestigious smaller private colleges in Maine including Bowdoin College, Colby College and Bates College, all of which rank as some of the best private colleges in the US. Portland is the largest city in Maine, but there are an equal number of colleges options located in Bangor and Lewiston.
