Colleges in Rhode Island Newport

Despite being the smallest state in the US, there are many strong colleges and universities in Rhode Island, both public and private. Two of the largest public schools in the state are the University of Rhode Island and Rhode Island College. Private colleges in Rhode Island include the very selective ivy-league private Brown University located in Providence. This is also the oldest school in the state and was founded before the American Revolution.

There are many reputable specialized colleges in Rhode Island, including the prestigious arts college Rhode Island School of Design, RISD, and Johnson and Wales University, a culinary arts and hospitality program. Also notable is the Naval War College, which is operated by the United States Navy. The state also runs the Community College of Rhode Island with several campuses in the state.
