Texas is a state that puts great value in education and devotes much of its resources to maintaining strong colleges and universities. There are over 500 colleges and universities in Texas, the majority being located in the cities of Dallas, Houston, Fort Worth, San Antonio, and Austin. Texas has six public university systems and four independent public universities. Two of the most popular Texas colleges are Texas A & M University and Texas Tech University. Another popular and well-ranked public school is the University of Texas at Austin, home of the football team the Longhorns.
A prestigious private college in Texas is Rice University, known as the “hidden Ivy.” There are also lots of strong community college options, as each major city has its own system, including the Houston Community College System and the Austin Community College.
