Florida International University has a reason for having "International" in its name. We are one of the most diverse schools in America. Apart from being located in Miami, the university is home to a huge number of nationalities. In fact, the atrium in the Main Center or the Graham Center, has flags for every nationality in the university. Don't worry about not finding your designated friend circle, because every kind exists at FIU. We have multiple fraternities and sororities, of honor, professional, and social kinds. We have organizations or clubs for every single thing from poetry clubs to FIU's very own established Student Government. And don't worry about the lack of girls, it's Miami ;)
We are International for a reason. If you want to become a global citizen, incorporating the global learning and perspective FIU helps you build, then this university is the place for you. FIU is a big campus; I remember getting lost there during my first stay. It's the right size especially for freshmen, since their main buildings are bult closely. The residence halls aren't apart and are close to each other, so one doesn't have any difficulty in getting to other halls. In fact, we have PantherTrams or small vehicules that take students around campus. FIU is an enormous school in terms of population having more than 40,000 students. Because of that, the adminstration can get slow at times. But imagine the exposure one gains by being amongst a multitude of diversities. We don't have school pride. We have PantherPride! I remember my first orientation day. I had just come from a different country with three huge bags right into the university. Being early for dorm check-in, I had no place to keep my bags. The FIU Orientation Office kindly let me use their storage space till the time my check-in date came. I believe FIU's parking makes one more attentive and alert because there's a shortage of it.
FIU is home to more than 40,000 students. You can expect every kind. They are lazy ones who do nothing and bright ones who get constant A's. I've seen both. As an International Student, I never felt out of place. It's college! You can wear whatever you want as long as it's appropriate and suitable, which FIU has.
It all depends on you. Are you a people's person? Are you social? If you're not, you'll have to develop on how to become one, because that is one of the features of a global citizen. FIU adopts Global Citizenship. FIU isn't much of an expensive school either. That is why it is home to many students. I believe a university shouldn't be that expensive. Everyone has a right to pursue an education despite the financial difficulties.
There is an organization for every kind of student. You like literature? There's a club for that. Are you political? Welcome to the Student Government and the Residence Hall Association. Are you a party-type and friendly? Social Fraternities! Do you seek to have a bright and established future? Professional and Honor Fraternities.
The most popular are the fraternities, Student Government Association, and the Resident Hall Association. I'm involved with so many things including all mentioned above. I can tell you more about it during a session.
FIU is big on football, volleyball, and basketball. Hey! We are the winners of the Sunbelt Conference!
FIU is big on traditions. If you kiss your loved one on the Kissing Bridge, you'll get married to that person. Rotate the revolving cube near the Deuxieme Maison building before an exam and you'll get A's! (Only if you studied) Step on the FIU seal and you won't graduate!
And plenty more!
Visit Downtown Miami. Eat out if I can. Or...study in my room, finish up homework. Or..swim in the pool, work out at the gym...Or chill with my friends, play some volleyball...Or...SLEEP!
When I become one of the first freshman to actually become a Housing Senator for the Student Government. The youngest senator in the government!
I've seen a lot of couples and a lot of beautiful girls (Umm MIAMI?) . Why is it that the sorority girls look the prettiest? :( And please don't just visit our Football games for our cheerleaders. I know the cameras zoom on them deliberately...haha. It's a diverse school. We have every kind of type, trust me! You just got to know how to look ;)
It's sucks we have only 2 Greek Houses. But we have a lot of fraternities and sororities. In fact we have 4 different councils that manage 4 different types of Greek organizations. I see at least five different letters everyday. It gets hard trying to remember all those Greek letters. A is for Alpha..B is for Beta..C is for?
My professors were cool. Every university has different professors; just be precatious while picking classes :)
Since we have a LOT of commuter students, the parking situation gets really annoying :/ I'm glad I got no car :P
