The best thing about Rowan is the location to Philly. It's really convenient for internship purposes and nightlife. I also like the size of the campus. I thought about going to a large university for the longest time and on rainy and bitter freezing cold days I'm so thankful that I didn't! One thing I would change is the cafeteria menu on weekends- they don't offer as much as they do on weekdays, but my friends and I just save our 'Boro Bucks to order take-out on weekends. We end up having a lot of fun on those nights just because we're doing something different. On another note, don't fear the construction. We're trying to expand the campus, but it should be completed in 2010. Also, it's far enough from the dorms that you can't hear it. Most minor construction that was happening on campus is already completed. As part of the project, Rowan is building a Barnes & Noble and a Starbucks, along with other college-town stuff.
Classes are a great size. I've only had one class that had more than 30 students and the professor still knew my name. A lot of the times for intro classes you get the "big university feel" because one class period will be with all the intro classes, and another class period will be strictly with your professor so you get the best of both worlds. Another great thing about that is you get to experience all the professors and you get to know which teaching styles you would like the best for future reference. Don't be afraid to ask professors for their opinions based on your preferred teaching style. Most of them love to help. Many people still think of Rowan as a teacher's college, but it is soooo much more. Our communications department has won numerous awards and our engineering program is sky-rocketing. I'm a PR major and there are so many activities to get involved in to enhance my education- it's great!
One of the things I first noticed - and liked - about Rowan was the diversity. Coming from a REALLY diverse high school, it was an important factor in my college decision. We cover all races, and we have a really good study abroad program so we tend to host a lot of people from abroad. The best way to describe Rowan's student body is chill. We all wear sweatpants to class (unless of course you're coming from an internship or other job as an upperclassman) and you can count on that un-showered, unshaved, just got back from the gym kind of look. One tip: don't wear printed p.j.'s to class if they look like p.j.'s - it's just weird. Always go for the sweatpants! We really don't have a stuck-up student body. I've never had a problem with feeling out of place or unwelcome.
I lived in Chestnut and I LOVED it! At first I wasn't too sure about it because you're kinda secluded, but that almost makes it better because you don't have to sign your friends in and out or visitors when they spent the night. The max a guest is supposed to stay overnight is 2 nights when in the dorm, but it didn't matter in Chestnut (Magnolia is the same set-up too). My friends and I would hang out until 2 or 3 in the morning and it was great. We also made friends with a bunch of the RA's and a lot of the time they would hang out in our lounge and be just as loud as us! (note: ALWAYS try to be friends/friendly with your RA!)
The stereotypes I've heard are: state-school students, heavy party people
