Connecticut College is rumored to be full of being wearing J. Crew, Vineyard Vines, Sperrys and Jack Rogers sandals. While this is true of about 60% of the school's population, there are also many people who deviate from the traditional preppy look, opting for less expensive fashion in favor of practicality.
At Conn, the Honor Code is taken VERY seriously. That is not to say that cheating does not happen, but when it does there are grave consequences and sanctions as determined by a jury of peers (Honor Council). Similarly, there is an air of intolerance for diminished behavior in the residence halls so if you are looking for a place where others are held accountable for their actions Connecticut College is a great place to look.
Academics here are all about incorporating intellectual conversation outside of the classroom. While I enjoy most classes and the work I do for them, most of my productive conversations happen at lunch with a professor or during a program in one of the residence halls.
The most general type of Connecticut College student is the passionate one. Whether it is their major, varsity sport, single issue group or student leadership, students at Conn get involved. The opportunities here are vast and create an atmosphere of excitation, no matter the cause.
There are five main events that the student body looks forward to throughout the academic year - Fall Tent Dance, Festivus, Winter Formal, Spring Tent Dance and Floralia. Each event does have an element of drinking involved, but it is easy to have a good time without the help of alcohol. All of these events incorporate dorm, class and campus unity with having a good time.
Most students don't have class on Friday and if they do, they go hungover... Weekends start on Thursday with students hitting the bars downtown and playing games in rooms to kick off the weekend. Fridays are for recuperating, catching up on work and going to talks on campus. Saturdays are for sleeping in and going on trips to Starbucks and general work avoidance. Saturday nights revolve around the event of the night - dances, concerts, bar nights. Sundays are when work actually gets done!
The men's group on campus that works to end violence against women (1 in 4) literally walked a mile in women's high heels to show their support of women. It was incredibly hilarious, but also for a great cause and reminded the campus of the reality of violence toward women.
Conn is known for lacking in its dating scene - it is more likely that students will hook up at a dance on a Saturday night. It is not impossible to date, but it is more than likely that you'll end dating in your friend group and it won't be anything like high school.
We don't have fraternities or sororities on campus.
If you put in an effort to be in contact with your professors, they will respond favorably. I have developed many relationships with professors, in and out of my major, which is helpful when applying to grad school and jobs.
