What is the stereotype of students at your school? Is this stereotype accurate?
Many people who do not attend James Madison University see it as a typical "party school" and tend to overlook other aspects JMU has to offer. Unfortunately, the students on campus see the stereotype of their fellow peers in the same light. Many people describe JMU students as party-ers and "biddies." Whats a "biddie" one may ask? Many students would say its the typical JMU girl: North Face and Uggs by day, short skirts and tight dresses by night. However, this is fortunately not the majority of the students at JMU. I see the stereotype at JMU as prideful members of a community who bleed purple and gold. Anywhere you go on campus, you are bound to see more JMU attire than the bookstore could possible hold. The JMU pride, however, goes deeper than skin level. It is something that resonates within the soul and spirit of every proud JMU student. I think this something that is obvious and can be seen in light of recent tragic events that have swept the JMU community. JMU is truly, a diamond in the rough stereotype.
What are the academics like at your school?
Bottom line, students go to college for the academics. We all want jobs and a future to look forward to. I switched my major my second year of college to Communication Sciences and Disorders. Although the major was small compared to others on campus, my courses were all about the latest technological and research advancements. As a clinically based field, Speech Pathology and Audiology need to be constantly up to date with the most recent findings and theories. The courses are challenging, especially your junior and senior year. Also, as a senior, your fall semester is full of applying to masters and doctorate programs. Fortunately, the advisors and professors are fully aware and supportive of this. Throughout my career, I was presented with multiple opportunities to learn more about the field outside of the classroom. I have worked on undergraduate research, observed in the hearing clinic right on JMU's campus, and took part in lectures in the graduate cadaver lab. If you want a hands on and rewarding major, CSD is a perfect fit.
Describe the students at your school.
The student body is extremely diverse. This can be seen any day on the Commons, on the Quad, or really anywhere you go. Clubs and organizations are huge on campus and play a big role in putting on campus wide events and activities. Greek life is prevalent, but definitely not overwhelming and all encompassing.
What are the most popular student activities/groups?
Off-campus parties at JMU are there, and a big part of many JMU student's college experience. Fortunately, there are so many other opportunities for everyone. Clubs and organizations can be seen throughout campus putting on Late Night Breakfasts, concerts, Open Mic Nights, and intermurals.
