The University of Denver has a stereotype of rich, white students. This is not true. More than 84% of the students attending DU receive some form of financial aid. Also, diversity at DU has been increasing as well.
The University of Denver has a stereotype of being a ski school. Colorado is the prime spot for skiing and snowboarding during the winter, and you will find many students who do ski and snowboard. The difference is that DU students are also committed to academics, and usually prioritize classes first. The stereotype is true in the sense that DU is filled with active, courageous young people who enjoy the Colorado outdoors. However, there is more to DU than just skiing or snowboarding, and students are well-rounded in their life choices.
While saying that college has been the experience of a lifetime may seem cliche, I cannot seem to describe my time at the University of Denver in any other concise way. The quarter system allows students to take a broad variety of classes. The size of the school is comforting: small enough to have a great community, and large enough to meet new and interesting people. The best aspect of the school for me is the atmosphere that the student body presents itself with. We are friendly, intelligent, and proud of our school's accomplishments. This attitude is contagious and makes school involvement incredibly easy. The only thing I would change is the cost of the school, however, the University does a great job of providing financial aid and opportunities to achieve more scholarship.
I decided to come to DU because of the academic opportunity it provided for me. The classes are small, interactive, and interesting. Students participate often because of the comfortable and engaging classroom environments. Each professor I have had has been extremely passionate about their topic, and knows every student's first and last name. I am double majoring in English and Philosophy and have had intellectual conversations about these classes outside of the classroom. The most interesting class I've taken so far has been "Theatre of the Absurd". The themes within classes apply to life outside of the classroom to provide real-life knowledge.
I always spend my class time feeling curious. The professors I've had at DU inspire students to be interested in the topic as well. Classes are challenging, but rewarding. DU has a small class size, which make classes interactive, participatory, and conversational.
The University of Denver sports teams have won 27 NCAA Division I national championships. DU was ranked 23rd out of 330 Division 1 sports programs in the country in 2008. To say the least, DU has incredible athletics. Even though we don't have a football team, students are school spirited at games and our teams are talented and perform well. Hockey games provide students with a similar environment to football games. You won't feel like you're missing out on anything, rather the opposite; DU's sports are well worth supporting.
