UNLV has stereotypes but I suppose that is true of all universities. It is not really a Greek school but there is definitely a frat and sorority presence there which does get kind of annoying some of the times. Other than that group, all of the other groups are pretty enjoyable/unnoticeable. The student athletes are pretty nice but definitely noticeable because of the sweats they wear and their abnormal height. Geeks you will definitely find but mainly if you are in or around the engineering building but that's a good thing.
Honestly, I enjoy UNLV. It is a big university but not so big as to feel overwhelmed. I love the architecture, especially the new buildings. The library, student union and the gym are all amazing. I wish there were more trees but then again this is a desert college and you get what you get. I would definitely knock some buildings down bc some are just down right ugly and getting a little long in the tooth. I really enjoy being on campus but I wish it made me want to stay more. I spend most of my time on campus in class obviously but when not there it is usually in the student union just hanging with friends. UNLV has some pretty neat places around campus to just hang out which I really enjoy, especially during the fall and winter when it is not so hot outside.
As for college town, there is none. The area right around UNLV is not the best and if given the choice I would not live there or around there. It is about a mile from the vegas strip which is pretty cool and gives some nice views some times.
The budget problems that are facing this school suck. Many programs have been cut and supposedly more are to be cut. Tuition has been raised a few times and might rise again.
I have heard a lot of my friends complain about the professors at unlv and i agree with them a little bit. a lot of them complain about how hard the professors are or how much work they give or how mean they are but that is totally avoidable if you use ratemyprofessor.com which i do. that site usually gets me really good insight on what professors to take. some of the professors really care and are great teachers while others think they are too important to put their class above their research which i guess comes with going to a large university. a lot of the math and science professors are oriental and crazy hard to understand but after taking one or two courses like this you will have almost mastered mandarin.
the students at unlv are intelligent but when not in class like to just hang out and not really speak intellectually. Then again that really depends on what major the kids are in. if you hang out by the engineering or physics buildings you will definitely hear some intriguing and impressive conversations. With the amazing library unlv has there are always a ton of kids studying in it but also bc the library is so amazing, it has become a hang out where a lot of kids don't study.
I don't personally spend time outside of class with professors but I will shortly since i have to start doing research. i look forward to it. the school's academic requirements are not that high unfortunately but then again i live in nevada where the school system sucks.
There are a bunch of different kinds of students at unlv. people from all different backgrounds attend but seeing as how this is a university, most of the kids have some kind of money. those who don't get along just fine with those that do. since it is not an ivy league school there is no big gap of wealth between the students. all of the students get along just fine with only a few snide remarks thrown at the frats every now and again. i honestly don't think any student would feel out of place at this school.
most students are casual and just wear whatever to class but you get your business student wearing suits every once in a while. nobody really cares but a lot of people dress to impress.
students seem to be pretty politically active and aware but then again who knows, they might just be talking out of their butts. i hear a lot of the students talk about how much they will earn one day but it is mostly from kids in a field where they are poised to make a lot of money or from kids who come from a pretty wealthy background.
there are many things to do in and around campus especially since it is in the heart of vegas. you could always go gamble or drink but if you are too young for that there are plenty of things to do. the campus has movie nights a lot and pool movie nights which are pretty cool. there are always a ton of sports organizations you can join and play in although they are usually full of frats and sorority sisters. oozeball is a really popular tradition/sport played at unlv. i don't really know much about it except that is is really popular and you get really messy. the athletic events are alright popular bc our teams aren't that good except for our basketball team. that is easily the most supported and most attended sports event but when that is not going on, most people don't really care about our sports.
if you are not into activities there are plenty of things to do such as see plays or musicals or concerts for free on campus. they also have a lot of lectures and guest speakers that are free to attend. i attended one the other day on the possibility of future inter-planetary travel. it was fascinating.
as for dating, it seems like a lot of people date but not for long. it is usually one and done or a few and done. don't see a ton of long relationships here.
like most students who attend unlv i do not live on campus. i am a commuter student so on the weekend i just chill at my house or with friends in henderson, maybe hit up vegas at night and have some fun but other than that it is pretty relaxing just to not be at school.
for my friends who live on campus it is basicaly the same thing, they either go and visit their families around town or just stay on campus and chill with their friends, maybe get some studying or hw done in the library.
If people at unlv are not already in a committed relationship, which a lot of them seem they are, it is not likely that they would want to be in one. it seems like a lot of people have been in relationships for a long time with people from high school. it is easy to meet new people and ask them on dates but for the most part although they may say they want a relationship, people who go to this campus are very selfish and shallow and are just looking for a good time which i suppose goes with the image that vegas has made for itself. there is an attitude of "why go steady with some guy when I can just dress slutty, go to clubs and meet a different one to take care of me each night?"
not ideal
I am not in a fraternity for many reasons but UNLV is not one of them. i know a bunch of people who are involved in the greek life at unlv and they seem to love it. unlv is not really a mecca for greek life like some other universities in that it does not have greek houses on campus but that does not change the fact that the greek societies are prevalent in basically every activity on campus. i don't want to talk bad about them or the people in them because i do not really have any experience with them because honestly they just aren't my thing.
students only really complain about their professors that they can't understand bc of their accents, their coursework and projects, and the budget concerns.
most students complain about the budget and how it is really in shambles. classes are being cut, majors and programs are being but and tuition is getting higher each year which is really astounding. unlv used to be cheap and now it is getting near the cost of some other schools. i know a lot of kids including myself who take out loans to go to school and the rise in tuition is not helping us at all. it really makes some people angry to that instead of spending money on the students, the school is using money to build a new basketball training facility. they need to hire more professors instead of letting them go.
the stereotype for the kids at my school is those who just drink and go out to the strip and party all night. for the most part i must say that this is not true mainly bc it is so fricken expensive to go out and drink and go clubbing all of the time. there are people who tend to do that a lot more than others but for the most part all of the kids at unlv are laid back and like to party but mostly do it at kick-backs at their friend's houses if they even party at all.
