UNLV's students have a reputation of being the type that go to the Las Vegas Strip's clubs and party whenever they get the chance. There certainly are a lot of students for whom this is true. However, there are plenty who eschew that type of behavior entirely.
The cost of attending UNLV is really quite reasonable and the quality of the education can be top notch depending on your major and the effort you put into it.
Most students are mildly unfriendly to anyone they do not already know. Many would prefer that you do not talk to them. This is partly due to UNLV being a commuter campus.
If I am not in class I spend most of my time in the student union on the second floor reading or in a computer lab browsing the internet. There are a lot of fantastic organizations on campus who are continually involved in the community. There are many great extra-curricular programs that you can get involved in: Executive Mentor Program, Student Ambassadors, CSUN, Contender Challenge, etc.
The general education core at UNLV has the tendency to bee a box-checking experience. The campus bookstore is generally a complete rip-off and I wait until after the first day of classes to buy only the necessary books online.
All the faculty at the Lee Business School are absolutely fantastic.
Do I like the professors? In a word: Absolutely!
I am an Accounting major. The undergraduate accounting program at UNLV has recently become 22 in the nation in the mid-size college division.
I have had a ton of really great professors in my major. A couple have been absolute geniuses. Every professor at the Lee Business School has been fantastic. Before I changed to a business major, I had problems with a couple of my professors, but have loved every one of them since the change.
Alumni of the accounting program have said that they are just as competitve as students graduating from any other college, and are only becoming more so.
I really do admire all of my business professors and I plan to keep in contact with them after I graduate.
My least favorite class was PSC 100 because the teacher was a complete idiot who directly contradicted the textbook on 5 of the 50 questions on the final exam.
It is one of the most diverse campuses in the nation. Every student can find their place here.
Fraternities and sororities are definitely ever-present on campus. They even have their traditional section in the Student Union.
There are tons of music events, orchestra, choir, jazz band constantly going on. They have the Barrick Lecture Series with guests like Howard Dean debating Karl Rove. There are pre-release screenings of movies on campus pretty regularly.
