Many seem to characterize the typical Knox student as a 'loner' or a 'geek' or an 'outcast'. While Knox College is certainly the destination for high school outcasts that never really 'fit in,' it is also the destination for countless jocks.
With around 1/3 of the student body electing to 'Go Greek' as the common saying goes, it should be clear that the social environment at Knox College is centered around alcohol, party culture, and sports. The athletic department is in disrepair, however, with the football team winning 2 games over the previous 2 seasons combined (and the Men's Basketball team finishing with 2 wins and over 20 losses last season). This leads to a vague sense of 'jock unrest' culminating in garbage cans being littered throughout campus every weekend night. The campus is ugly and dirty because of it, adding to the impossibly bleak campus aesthetic.
While this certainly isn't the only social activity at Knox, the 'outcast' portion of the student body hangs out in Post Lobby (the all-girls dormitory's public lobby) and plays video games, Magic: The Gathering, various online MMORPG's, and participates in Knox College's very own Live-Action Role-Playing Club (LARC).
If you aren't an outcast or a jock, you may be out of luck, unless you can deal with a choice of larping or a frat party each weekend.
- There are many opportunities for research grants, most of which are readily accessible to students (often too accessible actually).
- Social scene is terrible; one must chose between live-action role-playing and getting sloppily drunk at one of the many fraternity parties each weekend.
- Poor relations with the town of Galesburg
- Worst nickname in the U.S. (Prairie Fire)
- Administrative Bureaucracy is very complex; access to funds often becomes an issue of bureaucratic untangling.
- Nothing to do ever.
- Student Government is weak and ineffective.
- Students are generally 'leftists' and are generally not strongly religious.
- Students are politically apathetic.
- Typical student works hard, produces sound, yet bland and unimportant work (possibly due to not requiring standardized testing scores for admission).
- Nothing happening in the community at all; don't go here if you want to foster connections or try to make a difference.
- Ugly campus.
- Generally, Knox College is a poor institution with an ugly, depressing campus, no social scene, and students without initiative. The faculty is helpful and small class sizes allow for one-on-one instruction (if the student reaches out). Research opportunities are plentiful.
- Professors are generally knowledgeable.
- Small class sizes; one-on-one instruction available (if student takes initiative; students here don't take initiative).
- Class participation is common, however, quality class participation is not.
- Students do not have intellectual conversations outside of class. The social scene is devoid of intellectual pursuits; it is striking and awful.
- Students are not competitive; very apathetic and devil-may-care attitude is prevalent.
- Education is geared towards knowledge rather than job-seeking, however, students tend to be far more job-oriented. The intellectual culture among students is greatly lacking.
- Decent Economics department; diverse faculty from various areas of expertise. Many research opportunities and topics of study.
- Anyone not falling under the 'jock' label or the 'outcast' label will feel out of place at this school.
- Many international students, but very little interaction between different cultures, races, and financial backgrounds.
- Students are apathetic; mostly leftist and non-religious.
