St. Olaf College  -  St. Olaf

St. Olaf College Summary

What's this?
St. Olaf College has a longstanding reputation as being both Lutheran and musically gifted, but its 21st century reputation is staked more on its study-abroad opportunities and environmentally sustainable campus.
Located in Northfield, Minnesota, St. Olaf was founded by Norwegian-American immigrants, whose legacy is still notable in the school's Lutheran affiliation and renowned Scandinavian studies program. Its reputation for musical talent is well-deserved: One-third of students are involved in one of dozens of performance ensembles, and its world-famous choir and orchestra perform in a televised PBS holiday special annually. Academics are rigorous, with a grueling 20-credit General Education core that every student must complete, but they also offer unique global opportunities--seventy-eight percent of the Class of 2006 participated in international and domestic study-abroad programs. It might get (very) cold in the winter, but St. Olaf students find plenty of ways to keep busy indoors, through clubs, musical and performing arts groups, and service organizations. Social life mostly takes place on campus, in nearby Northfield (where Oles mingle with students of rival college Carleton), or across the river in Minneapolis-St. Paul. While the school preserves its strong sense of history, it's also one of the most forward-thinking colleges in the country when it comes to environmental sustainability. A newly-constructed wind turbine provides one-third of the school's electricity, and students can pitch in personally on the campus' organic farm.
