What is your overall opinion of this school?
I like ASU the way it is. I can identify with going there but it is so large now that its more of a type of community rather then a school. For me, I like not knowing anyone on campus and just going to class to get my stuff done. For those that want to get involved, there are tons of organizations to do so with.
One thing I hate are those preachers on campus who shout fire and hell to everyone walking past. If you want to be a Christian then fine, but don't start shouting to random individuals as they are trying to go to school to better themselves. This and some of the protests that go on around campus are annoying to walk through.
The only big school pride I see is around football season and then it is only around 15 percent of the student body who get into it. However, that 15 percent is a very boisterous crowd so it makes it seem like football is everyone's dream.
What are the academics like at your school?
I am a social work major. I chose this major because I eventually want to counsel families with autistic children. This major is relatively easy for me, but you have to have the right mindset in order to do well in the class. Expect a lot of exploring feelings. If you have many discriminatory behaviors, you will not get through a single class.
Social work is geared towards getting a job. I am just finishing my Bachelors right now and the school requires me to have an internship, therefore I am writing this right now to stall going into my intership-which is a hospital. I like my internship but it is hard to be motivated to go in when I don't see any type of paycheck from it.
Describe the students at your school.
We have tons of financial aid students here, there is absolutely no shame in this. We have a gay sorority. ASU is HUGE. If you have an interest in 18th Century poetry, I bet you can find a club about it.
Tons of people are from the midwest (Just like me)!
Most campuses are left wing and ASU is no exception.
ALL I talk about is how much I will earn someday, haha.
What are the most popular student activities/groups?
I never got involved in the party scene. You could say I was too nerdy for that. I just hang out with like minded friends. Now I live with my boyfriend and my dog Olga so we rarely go to Mill avenue.
I am graduating early and getting a minor + certificate on top of it. I don't think I missed out on anything not partying. Working in the hospital, I see what "hardcore" partying can do to you, it isn't pretty.
Fraternities/Sororities are being phased out on campus. Their buildings are being torn down. Both my brother and sister belonged to one around 15 years ago and they state the atmosphere has turned greatly against fraternities/sororitises.
What is the stereotype of students at your school?
Blonde, Cheeky, Sorority Girls who come to ASU with Daddy's money and then get drunk and flash cars going past on Mill avenue.
Is the stereotype of students at your school accurate?
Only in Freshman year, I woud say. After that most students stop living in the dorms and as you get into higher level classes the "bimbos" are surprisingly no longer present. ASU is so big, you can find anyone with your interests.
Here’s your chance: Say anything about your college!
Campus really only matters in freshman year, when you are just trying to fit in and find your spot. I don't pay any attention to what occurs on campus anymore and I will be there for a few more years for my graduate degree. Concentrate on getting through school fast so you can earn the money. Your wallet and car that actually runs will thank you.
