What is your overall opinion of this school?
Elon has been the perfect size for me. It is small enough that really get individual attention from Professors (My research mentor called and woke me up the other day to ask me a question about our study), but it is big enough that there are so many resources out there. If you're looking for a school big on sports, I wouldn't come to Elon because are sports teams are not a huge highlight; however, a lot of students to get behind the teams and go out to watch football, basketball and baseball!
The best thing about Elon is the community feel. It has become my home away from home. You can't beat the beauty of the campus and the southern charm of the people!
What are the academics like at your school?
Not only do professors know my name at Elon, they know my phone number and I've had dinner at their house. Class participation is huge at Elon. There tends to be a lot of group work and presentations. The learning is very hands on. There are some really unique classes at Elon including a class on Harry Potter and even one on the Religion of NASCAR. The Psychology department continues to grow. Most of the professors have their Ph.Ds and are really engaged in what they are teaching. As with most universities, the library at Elon is more heavily populated during mid-terms and finals, but students here know how to get their work done when the time comes.
Describe the students at your school.
Elon tries to say it is diverse, but the truth is is really isn't all that diverse. However, geographically, it is definitely diverse. My freshman year my roommate was from Mass and my suitemates were from Texas and Georgia. There are a lot of people from the north like New Jersey and Maryland. Since Elon is a small liberal arts university there are a lot of wealthier students here, but with all the scholarship students there are also those that are not from the same SES. A range of students interact, and although around 35% of the population is Greek, Greeks and non-greeks hang out often. Although Elon may not have a lot of diversity, like I said before, they try to let students travel or go into the community and meet diverse groups. There are groups on campus however for different religious and racial groups as well as a LGBT group.
What are the most popular student activities/groups?
Guest speakers at Elon rock! We just had Bill Clinton. We've had Colin Powell, Sandra Day O'Conner and others such as the founder of Habitat for Humanity. Our theater is also top notch. We were chosen as one of only a handful of schools to produce Phantom on a University level.
The dating scene is terrible. There are 60% girls and only 40% boys. And everyone knows the Elon boys suck.
Some people at Elon party every night and others leave it to the weekend. One problem is the fact that we only have one bar since one got closed down. There are a lot of house parties and frat parties.
My friends and I do movie nights, themed parties and we like to go out to eat. I didn't really drink till Junior year and I had plenty to do! We have Greensboro and Raleigh near by and can go to concerts. The beach is 3 hours one direction and the mountains are 3 hours the other direction.
What is the stereotype of students at your school?
We are sometimes call the Elon "Country Club." And often even make fun of our own campus by calling it the bubble.
Is the stereotype of students at your school accurate?
There is a lot of wealth in the Elon Community, but you don't need to be wealthy to fit in. Our campus is beautiful, so as far as that goes, it is like a country club and yes sometimes diversity is lacking, but Elon provides students with great opportunities to go out and meet individuals from different cultures etc through activities like study abroad and volunteer opportunities.
Here’s your chance: Say anything about your college!
I could go on and on about Elon, but I don't have a lot of time! I was choosing between University of Florida and Elon - and I am so happy with my choice! I have made lifelong friends here - I have had unbelievable professors - I have heard amazing speakers - I have traveled to 4 different countries -- Long Live Elon!
