    • What is your overall opinion of this school?

Our school is an awesome size - 10,000. Big enough that you can meet new people anytime, but small enough for a good community feel. It's not a college town, but the local community rallies around campus because were the only major university in South Florida. I'll always remember (but sometimes not specifics) my Thursday nights in the grove. I'll always remember going to the beach every weekend. I'll always remember the class I took with my President. And I'll always remember the awesome friends I made along the way.

    • What are the academics like at your school?

For the most part, professors do a solid job. Often times though, I rely on the old adage that college is what you make of it. If you go out of your way to introduce yourself, make yourself known during class, go to office hours, etc. then you'll take the most away from your academic experience. You can cruise and get C's and D's if you want, but you can also put in some effort, learn some new things, and get some good grades.

I habitually have political discussion with my friends and professors outside of class. In fact one professor invites students out to dinner at the Rat before each of our classes just to talk.

Often times however, it feels like there is more emphasis on learning for a good job (especially in the business school) rather than finding an intrinsic value in education.

    • Describe the students at your school.

Hot! The girls here are amazing. Everyday I look around and I'm amazed at how gorgeous they are.

I've never felt out of place, but I'm an upper middle class white male, so it's tough for me not to feel in the majority. The culture of Miami is very Hispanic (cuban), but at UM it's not as strong. Students usually wear shorts and T-shirts to class, but when they go out at night, especially to South Beach, they're dressed to the 9's.

    • What are the most popular student activities/groups?

Last weekend... On Thursday I went to the Grove with some of my fraternity brothers. On Friday I gave a tour of campus to prospective students, went to work, and drank some beer at the Rat. On Saturday I went to the beach during the day, and went to Swamp Stomp at Key Biscayne that night. Swamp Stomp is a concert held at an outdoor venue with a bunch of local bands and cheep beer. On Sunday I relaxed, did a little homework, and had some friends over for dinner. My typical weekend usually goes something like that.

    • Is the stereotype of students at your school accurate?

Yes and no. The motto I think our school exhibits is "work hard play hard". Many students are in the library or study rooms Sunday through Wednesday, but Thursday through Saturday most students like to go out and have a good time. Whether it's hitting up the Grove on Thursday nights or just going the the beach and hanging out with friends on the weekend, there is no shortage of social activities. If you're a 4.0 student who wants to spend all your time in the library to get that 4.0 then Miami probably isn't the right place for you. But if you want to work hard and have a lot of fun along the way, then you found your school. What good is academic knowledge if you're not able to put it into place and use it with others?

Yea, our school is pretty wealthy, but 51% of the kids are on some kind of merit based scholarship, and 80% have their tuition subsidized in some way. So there's beginning to be a good mix.

Sick cars! But I drive a 1998 Mitsubishi mirage, so again, there's definitely a spectrum.

    • Here’s your chance: Say anything about your college!

UM is an amazing school. It's given me so much, and I love it with all my heart. I've met so many wonderful people here and some awesome professors who truly care about me as a student and an individual. One of my professors actually called her doctor for me during class so I could get a referral for a surgery I eventually needed. If you're looking for a well rounded college experience filled with academic integrity, a great social life, and great people along the way, come to UM. It's great to be a Miami Hurricane!
