What is your overall opinion of this school?
Samford is a small school, but not to where you have classes with all the same people depending on the class and your major. Many students here might get on your nerves, but there are others who are truely amazing people. For the most part, students are not entirely preoccupied with their work which makes it possible to make good friends. We have strict visitation rules which are very annoying. There are plenty of places to go in the area, no worries there unless you're looking for a club. I hear clubs are harder to come by.
What are the academics like at your school?
Samford is full of teachers who are willing to go above and beyond to help you. They even make good friends or mentors. Most of the teachers know what they are doing, and will take the time to explain it thoroughly. Most of my teachers know me by name, all the math teachers do, even the ones I haven't taken classes with. Class participation is very common. There a fair share of busy students, but most of them can maintain a social life. Intellectual conversations can be had outside of class, some deeper than others of course. Samford has a great math department. It is fairly small, but there are enough teachers for you to have choices as far as the courses you can take. The teachers are all very nice with ample office hours. Samford does require a good deal of core classes which can be a little bothersome. They aren't difficult, but they do take time. The education at Samford is geared toward getting a job and learning for its own sake.
Describe the students at your school.
LGBT, unless you're a music major, you should turn away from Samford. Samford students do not accept non-heterosexual people. I believe you should be able to be free, and you will be better able to do that at another school. If you hold beliefs that condradict traditional doctrines, you can get along here, but make it a point to know how you're talking to before you start a theological conversation. It can be difficult to find a group of friends. Some groups are very clickish, but there are free students out there. You just have to look for them. Students don't normally group by major except for a few majors like music, theatre, and art. There might be others.
What are the most popular student activities/groups?
I am apart of Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia. It is a social music fraternity. Some brothers are music majors but more than half are not, and prospectives are not weighted by musical talent. It's a very welcoming group of guys. It's a fraternity without people who are on a power trip. I met my closest friends through Phi Mu Alpha, and through band. I am friends with some computer science majors (it's my 2nd major). I enjoy staying up late, talking the night away with close friends. These people are rare at Samford, though. Most students at Samford have a stable sleep schedule (in bed by midnight if not an hour or two before).
What is the stereotype of students at your school?
Samford students are fundamentalist Christians who are intolerant of other people.
Is the stereotype of students at your school accurate?
No, but some aspects hold true. Most Samford students are conservative Christians, and we do have students who say they are tolerant of other people whose actions say differently. Many Samford students will shut their mind if their faith is challenged.
