There are so many opportunities to do research and push your education to the next level. The size is perfect-- but for people who don't want to see their random hookup ever again, Bates might not be for you; you WILL see everyone in the new commons (which is AMAZING). I feel like there isn't a lot of school pride, but nevertheless if you go to an athletic event to support a friend, roommate, or classmate, you will not be alone. Little known fact that we do indeed have a college alma mater and other Bates songs; people just don't KNOW them. Bates is definitely lovable for such events as the Puddle Jump, Senior Week, Harvest Dinner, Gala, and the high study abroad rates.
The best thing about Bates is the small class sizes and therefore the recognition students get from Profs. Batesies definitely have intellectual convos outside of class, although they may be hard to find among all the drunken night before stories. My fav class was definitely Mammalogy... camping up at Moosehead and going "cruising" at night to try to see moose while munching on Oreos was unforgettable. Bates has changed thier general education requirements and it's really confusing now... I have no idea how it works.
Batesies are pretty accepting of all types of people. LGBT are embraced... especially with "Lick it", a *cough* interesting dance before Gala. There used to be more distinction between "types" of students in Commons... but now everyone is smushed together. But there are definitely the jocks, the artsy kids, and the sciency kids on campus. The PreMed kids are scary.
So much to do... always!! Choose wisely!
That they live in a "Bates bubble," that they're all rich.
The bubble is kindof true-- although the Bates community often reaches out to L/A through volunteer services, we pretty much stay on campus for most activities. Yes, a lot of people come from wealthy backgrounds, but a good amount of people don't and have to work campus jobs and work hard to pay the bills.
