It's a great school. The professors are always willing to help you out, and can basically always be easily reached. The students are generally very nice, but I think they might be a little clique-y [this might just be because I'm a music student, though]. It's not too big, but not too small and you can get anywhere on campus pretty easily. The town's pretty nice, but everything closes around 9pm, so you've got to find something else to do, but I've never found that as much of a problem. Plus, there's Cornell right next door. I'll always remember my first Cortica Jug - the big annual football game against our rivals, SUNY Cortland. There was blue and gold everywhere and so many people!
As a music student, my experience is different than most other students. I basically live in the music building and will take very few classes outside of the school of music throughout my college career. For me, classes are pretty small (I'd say about 10-15 people on the average), and professors get to know you pretty quickly. The great thing about Ithaca's music program is that there is a 100% placement rate, so I know that my degree wont go to waste. But it's not just about training to get a job - we learn a lot that we can use outside of our field too!
The campus is very accepting of everyone, no matter your race, orientation, gender, etc. There are support groups all across campus and regular information sessions on anything and everything. The students are very well aware of what's going on around them, and care about it. I think you'd feel out of place here if you weren't open to new things or accepting of others who are different from you. A little over half (55%) of the student body is female, so there are definitely more girls on campus than guys. You'll see some people here that you wonder what they're thinking when they got dressed that day, or when they got their hair cut/colored, but then you realize that everyone's different and that they're just trying to express themselves. It's pretty cool.
Sports are pretty big, even though it's only a D3 school. Everyone gets geared up for the Cortica Jug game against rival SUNY Cortland in the fall. I'm a music major, so I don't have much of an opportunity to interact with students outside my discipline, but i've never been in a situation where someone didnt talk to someone else because of their major. My friends are mostly music majors, but we all have different background specialties and we're there for different reasons. I go out and party, but not all the time. A lot of times, you can just spend the night in watching movies and ordering food from campusfood.com. There's also this things called IC AfterDark, which is a group that puts on programs about once a month on a friday night which gives you an alternative to going out and partying.
1. We're all hippies and don't really care about anything.
2. We're not as smart as the kids' across the hill at Cornell.
3. We sit around and smoke hookah and/or weed all day.
1. In general, we may be more liberal and relaxed than student bodies at other institutions, but that doesn't mean that we don't care about the things going on around us. If anything, I'd have to say that we care more, or at least we show it. We're willing to listen to a lot of different opinions and everyone's comfortable doing and believing their own thing.
2. I can't officially say if we are or are not smarter than the students at Cornell, but Ithaca kids aren't dumb. I could have easily gotten into Cornell without a sweat, given my high school gpa and grades, but I chose to come to Ithaca because it has a great program for my major and because it has a relaxed, inviting atmosphere. We may not "grow-up" to be engineers of every shape and kind, but Ithaca students graduate with an extremely reputable degree and have the eclectic liberal arts background to back it.
3. You're going to find students smoking no matter where you go in today's society. I think this just goes along with the whole "Ithaca is a bunch of hippies" idea. Yes, you will see at least 3 hookahs out towards the end of a nice day with a bunch of people sitting around them, but that doesn't mean that everyone's doing it. As for weed, it's more prominent on any campus then you'd probably expect it to be. Just because Ithaca's got a no-tolerance policy with it, that doesn't mean it's not prevalent on campus, but like I said with the hookah, not everyone does it.
Nah, I think you covered it all. All I can say, is that I love it here!!
