I find Smith to be extremely stressful and lacking a social atmosphere. In terms of size, I find it just right. People are impressed when I tell them I go to Smith.
Student complaints: Dinning and too much work
Recent controversy: Blackface (racism), eliminating faculty positions in very important academic departments
administration: Selectively involved on campus
Spend time: I would say everywhere. I still involved on campus and so I find it hard to choose one place
College Town:As a New Yorker, I find Northampton to be small. There is definitely a creative vibe to it, but I don't think it caters to a college lifestyle (late night dinning etc)
Yes, my professors know my name. I also stay in touch with my professors on a regular basis. I love Smith academically, although it can get pretty insane at times. My favorite classes thus far have been (North African Politics with Greg White Seminar, Dance classes, Political Theory of the 19th Cent. Arts and Human Rights in Latin America (Amherst), etc
studying: Most students spend their time doing just that, studying.
competitiveness: HIGH
Intellectual conversations: My personal experience is that most students at Smith have a hard time balancing their social and their academic lives. So, most often than not, you will find students discussing their lack of sleep/stress over a good intellectual conversation.
Unique Class: Voices for Actors ( I LOVE IT!!!!!!)
Government dept: I really love my major and the professors. There is a reason why Government is one of the most popular majors at Smith. I have spent time with my professors outside of class and I continue to do so.
Academic requirements: I think they are just fine
Ac
Racial: DENIAL about racial problems at Smith. As a woman of color, I find this place to be incredibly unsupportive of it's students. Especially, after racial incidents occur.
Unity Orgs: I find they lack financial support to accommodate the needs of students from minority backgrounds. Sometimes these organizations can be exclusive to a particular ethnic group and or race.
socio-economic: Class is not widely discussed, but you can definitely feel sense the economic disparities amongst students.
Most students wear: It all depends, most people where jeans and something simple on top. Others decide to show their best outfits everyday.
Politically active: I find that students are NOT as active as then can be. The Smith Democrats are very active and so is the Amnesty International chapter, but I still think most students seem very apathetic.
Financial Background: Although the administration states that many students are on financial aid, I find there are many wealthy students on campus.
Very important to note: Little is done to create awareness around students with disabilities (physical or mental). I highly suggest students to take note of this.
The most popular groups on campus are
1) singing groups
2)Smith Dems
3)SGA
4)BSA
5)Athletic teams :crew
6)dance Celebration,
I am involved in or have been a part of....
SGA
senate
Nosotras
Amnesty International
BSA
SACSA
Traditions:
Quad riots
Midnight Scream
Convocation
Midnight madness
Rhythm nations
Pan-Africa
Mindhi Night
Black History Month Speakers
Otelia Cromwell
Sororities: Some of my friends belong to a chapter, but they crossed with sisters from UMASS and other institutions in the area. It is becoming more popular amongst students of color.
People do not party very often because their is no social atmosphere of that nature. Normally, people go off campus to enjoy themselves.
2 am awake: I am usually doing work or talking to someone in the hallway.
Crazy feminists
aggressive
very liberal (politically, socially, etc)
I would not say that we are crazy feminists, but we are fervent believers that women must be included in every dialogue none to humankind.
