Colby is the perfect size. Most of its students are slightly socially awkward, with a superiority complex. Waterville is known for being "sketchy" and the school has a struggling relationship with the town. Colby is in a "bubble" on the Hill. The administration tends to be overly strict, with lots of restrictions on student events.
Most professors know your name, even in bigger lecture classes they will make an effort to know who you are. Students study a lot, most are closet studiers, who pretend to throw caution to the wind and then spend hours studying. I frequently engage in intellectual conversation at lunch following class with one of my classmates.
Students are pretty diverse, but not racially. There's a fair amount of social diversity, in that mostly anyone can find a niche. Going to class outfits range from sweatpants and sweatshirts to khakis and sweaters. Most students are from somewhere "20 minutes outside Boston" and are fairly wealthy (upper-middle class). Most students are on the left, although there are many Republicans and those who fall somewhere in the center. I feel as though those on the right do get a fair amount of teasing from their more liberal peers.
Colby students have raided the Freeport outlets, managing to gracefully mix Mexicali Blues with J.Crew finds. The typical student is preppy, with flamming liberal tendencies, and enjoys spending time outdoors.
