Professor-student relationships are the pillar of the school. You are not just a face in a lecture, the professors know you as a student and person. They care deeply about their work and believe that they are molding us into aware productive adults.
Location is the one thing I would change, but only in terms of flying. The Hudson Valley is beautiful and has great accessibility to the city, but you cant just hop off the plane and be back in your dorm.
The size is just right. It is bigger than most other liberal arts schools, which I was unsure about when applying. Im really glad its bigger now.
Most people know about Vassar and react positively when I tell them that I go there. It takes a lot of work to get in here and do well, people know that and usually are impressed.
Most time spent is in the library. then the gym and my dorm.
vassar's administration doesnt effect my day-to-day, which means they are doing a good job.
There is a lot of school pride. I just got back from visiting a friend at another college and everyone was wearing sweatshirts from other schools, but at Vassar everyone is proud and represents us. People go to games, plays, etc. with enthusiasm.
EVERYTHING IS UNUSUAL about Vassar. I dont think there is another place quite like it. A place that is so academic, but also supportive. It has balance, which is a hard thing to do when you are 20 and want to do everything.
Most common complaint is that the library isnt open 24hours a day.
professors know my name, where i am from, where i live on campus, and what i do for extracurriculars.
favorite class has to be Politics of Difference, which challenged me to re-think an individual's role in society and participation in politics.
Least favorite was economics.
People study constantly.
Class discussion is central.
Intellectual conversations are happening constantly and is part of the academic experience here.
Students are ambitious and borderline competitive.
Greenville Prison class, where we went to prisons in new York.
Poli Sci is a pretty sweet department, but you better like reading and writing.
History is a great department, the professors are brilliant and make the students push themselves.
I know a lot of my professors and have real friendships with some.
there is no core curriculum, which means there are very few requirements and a lot of freedom!
You will know how to read critically, write well and THINK, which makes you a good candidate for a job...but not any specific one.
this is an open and accepting place. pretty diverse considering how expensive it is.
there are a lot of people who have a lot of money, but there are also a lot who dont. It is a need-blind application, so your money isnt a factor in admissions.
students spend time getting ready in the morning, i think it is a sign of respect for the teacher and a desire to be taken seriously. You show up in you PJ's and thats distracting from your comment in class...so kids make an effort, but dont show off wealth when getting dressed.
Students are very politically aware and active. it is a hotbed for politically minded discussion...predominantly to the left.
Students talk about what they will be doing, not how much they will make.
theater and a capella are big. Sports too. There are soooo many organizations. I am in a lot of politically driven ones and we have meetings every week and do a lot during the week. I also play a sport, which takes up a lot of time. But people come to our games and support us!
SO MUCH HAPPENS ON CAMPUS! There are too many lectures and guest speakers, which is great and makes all interests represented. If Im awake at 2am im walking back from the library.
people party on friday adn saturday nights...work hard, play hard.
Last weekend I campaigned for Obama on friday, came back to watch a bball game on saturday, went dancing till 3am that night, and spent all of sunday in the library.
there are so many things to do on the weekend besides drink...plays, concerts, dance parties, comedy groups, the list goes on.
The students are hipsters and righteous liberals.
Yes and no. Vassar students are an eclectic group and while many are liberal, there is still a supportive space for alternative views. Students challenge one another to think critically, but without it being overly competitive.
