Emerson: The Big Picture
As a journalism major, Emerson has so far provided me with a great education. I'm learning about so much, more than I would at other schools. One thing I'd change is the campus. Although this campus is what initially drew me in to this college, now that I'm here, I wish there was more of a campus to bring the school closer together. Our school is really small, but I like it that way. When I say I go to Emerson, I almost ALWAYS get the response, "wow that's a really good school". I live in the little building at Emerson, which is where most of my time is spent. Boston is a college city holding roughly 50,000 college students, so it's not weird to be going to college here. Emerson's administration is pretty laid back and understanding. They cater to their students. Teachers here are pretty laid back as well. You just have to be a good student, and they'll most likely understand any problems of yours. School pride? hah. Well, we're not really into sports nor do we have a homecoming or anything, so there's not much school pride here. I mean, not that students aren't happy to go here, but there's not that many ways to show it. However, student groups and such are huge here, so I guess when it comes to school pride you can see it there. Emerson is an unusual school in itself. People here are weird, but very smart and creative. They know what they want.
Emerson Academic Life
Classes at Emerson can be intense. Especially classes geared towards a major. Emerson students really get into class and in some instances, try to outsmart each other. Since Emerson is a very focused school, so people here know what they want to do for the rest of their lives. They know what they came to school for and most likely have known for a very long time. So, people really know what they're doing here. Emerson students are very intellectual and most likely you'll be having intellectual conversations outside of class, but it depends on who you're talking to. Emerson's classes are geared towards getting a job, and preparing you for the real world. In fact, I believe Emerson students will be more prepared for the real world than most students. In the journalism department we have equipment that some TV stations, newspapers etc don't even have. We're really proud of that and teaching students with such great tools. A unique class I'll be taking next semester is called "Queer Identity" it should be really interesting.
Emerson's Student Body
Emerson is really open to ANY group, especially the LGBTQ community. Although there are a lot of rich students here, there are many students in the middle and lower class. Emerson has such a diverse crowd- hipsters, hippies, yuppies, grunge, punk kids, emo kids, preppies... you name it, we have it. But, Emerson prides itself on being different, no one here is alike. The political scene is prevalent at Emerson, but we're mostly liberals. However, there are conservative groups here, so whatever you believe in, there's a group for it at Emerson.
Emerson Student Activities + Social Life
There are so many groups/clubs/organizations here on campus it's hard to say what's more popular than the other. I'm part of em Magazine, which was an online publication but now is a print publication. It was made by students two years ago, and it's made it really far. Everyone here gets into their groups because it's fun, what they love to do or what they want to do in the future. Athletic events aren't popular here, but they do exist. We have so many guest speakers, at least 2 a week. You'll always be busy with that, if you choose to attend. My closest friends lived in the say dorm as I did, and most on the same floor during my freshman year. The dating scene at Emerson? I'm not really sure. I don't think there's anyone I have encountered that I'd date. Boston is a great city with so many colleges so you have tons of options.
Partying here is really prevalent. Drugs? We got 'em. Alchohol? We got it. Whatever it is you're into, you're going to find it at Emerson. And you're going to find someone who's into it as well.
Boston is a 21+ city when it comes to things to do. That sucks. But, you'll find things on campus to do, whether or not it's drinking.
Emerson Naked Truth
Emerson is a great school. It's hard to give an opinion to someone because there are so many different things to say. So many different people, things to do, groups, everything. You're bound to find your niche here.
