Fisk University is a historically black university located in Nashville, Tennesee, and it boasts a vibrant history.
Fisk opened its doors in 1866, not two years after the Civil War, and its first students came out of slavery and poverty. Many notable African-American scholars and artists have walked Fisk’s halls as students or professors, and in 1952, Fisk became the first historically-black university to earn a Phi Beta Kappa charter. The world-famous Jubilee Singers also formed on Fisk’s campus, and Jubilee Hall was built in their name. The school’s sports teams (the Bulldogs) compete in Division III sports, and the school colors are gold and blue. Fisk offers a wide variety of academic tracks, but they are particularly well-known for their science programs, and many Fisk graduates go on to earn master’s and doctoral degrees in the sciences. Almost all Fisk undergraduates live on campus and contribute to the tight-knit community of some 900 students.
