IUB: The Big Picture
As far as the music scene goes, it is a mini Lincoln Center! There are literally a thousand performances to attend each year which include recitals, operas, ballets, orchestras, bands and more! Being in the music school, I don't spend much time outside of the music campus. The big controversy on campus is the smoking ban. I find it wonderful, but there are a significant amount of people who think this ban is a violation of their rights. Bloomington is definately a college town. Without IU, it would be just another small town in Indiana!
IUB Academic Life
The professors in the music are great! The music school offers a ton of courses in all aspects of music so you are able to get a well-rounded "book" education beyond the perfomance aspect of music. Since there are a lot of general electives needed to graduate (more than other conservatories), I would reccomend either studing for AP Exams or taking a few community college classes.
IUB's Student Body
IUB seems to be a very accepting campus. There is a large support group for LGBT. Any student should feel comfortable at IU, at least the music school. I can say about the rest of IU, because I wouldn't know.
IUB Student Activities + Social Life
I'm not personally involved in any groups at IUB because I'm engrossed in study and practice (as well as some socializing!). However, there are always tons of groups advertised on sidewalks, bulletin boards, etc. I'm sure one could join anything!
Fraternities and sororities dominate the campus. Their stereotypes do too. I always feel surrounded by them when I'm outside of the music school.
If you're awake at 2am on a Tuesday, you're probably writing a paper or finishing a huge assingment that you procrastinated starting until three hours ago.
