Macalester: The Big Picture
Macalester can sometimes get clicky and you especially notice this since it's such a small school. There are definitely those girls who you thought wouldn't be at college anymore, who make fun of people and are exclusive, but they go to good colleges too.
At the same time, you can find your own group of really nice people who genuinely care about others and the world around them.
Everyone kind of knows each other and it can get annoying at times. A lot of people know other people's business even though they may not even know those people personally.
Macalester Academic Life
It is hard work, but definitely doable. It's nice that teachers mostly know you're name and I have taken advantage of going to see teachers during their office hours way more than I was expecting myself to. They are very nice and friendly here.
I haven't found that students are competitive at all-- only one person has asked me what grades I've gotten.
Education is geared toward learning for its own sake, but then making a difference with the information you've just learned. Joining orgs or doing field work during J-term or the summer is encouraged.
Macalester's Student Body
Very ethnically diverse. On the other hand, people of the same ethnicities tend to hang out with each other.
Macalester Student Activities + Social Life
There are parties, but not very big or good ones. School orgs put on dances at least once a month, but they don't get too crowded even though they can be fun if you just go with your own friends. Mostly freshmen go to these, I think
What gets super crowded are the shows that MAc puts on, like music and dancing. They are a lot of fun.
