What are some stereotypes about Mt. Holyoke students?

There are many homosexual and trans-gender students. Another stereotype is that we are all over achievers and study way too much. There was a rumor that we have more homework than Yale.

Are the stereotypes accurate?

To some extent. If, on a tour or at a formal school-sponsored event, someone asks about the sexuality tenancies, an answer like this is often given: "it's not that our school has more homosexual and trans-gender students, it is just more obvious here because we are such an open-minded and accepting group of women."

In all honesty, there are probably just as many, if not more, homosexual and trans-gender students as heterosexual

As far as intellect goes, I would say that the majority of the students fall into one of these two categories
1) Not naturally smart but hard workers
2) Naturally smart but are slackers

I came to the school expecting motivated intelligent people but it seems that many people think that they are smarter than they really are. Furthermore, the really smart people don't seem to care about their work because they know that they test well and will end up getting good grades anyway.

Mt. Holyoke: The Big Picture

People have no idea if Mount Holyoke is a College, High School, or a Convent; almost no one has heard of this place. The nearest Starbucks is 20 minutes away.

The entire campus is haunted. There are several areas in dorm buildings that are permanently sealed off because "mysterious stuff" has happened in them.

The school makes too much of an effort to be accepting of everyone. In the fall semester of 2007, there was a seminar on racial stereotypes. The school decided to put people into groups based on their race. They were under the impression that this would make people feel more comfortable about opening up and expressing their opinions about racism. Personally, I don't understand how venting to people just like you is going to help. Bad Call, Mt. Holyoke.

Another problem on campus is that many people want the entire campus to be "gender- neutral." Instead of using the word "Freshman" we use the terms "First-Year" or "Firstie" because we are a women's college and theoretically, there should be no men here. However, quite a few students get upset when they are called "women" because they are trans-gender and do not see themselves as women. I find this completely absurd because if someone does not want to be referred to as a woman, than SHE should not go to a women's college.
Another problems is women having sex changes after they have been accepted. I find this infuriating as well. How hard is it to wait 4 years to have a sex-change?
There is nothing the school can do about it because they are "accepting to everyone" and there is no real way to check if someone has male/female parts or not.

Mt Holyoke is so proud about being one of the "Seven Sisters" that is still a women's college.
I think the school should just get over itself and let guys in.

Mt. Holyoke Academic Life

There is a very wide selection of courses to choose from. In addition we also have the opportunity to take classes at Smith, Hampshire College, Amherst College, and UMASS Amherst. Unfortunately we have about a million distribution requirements. By the time we get those done, we have to declare our majors and there is no time to take courses outside our major that we are interested in.
Students who take these "fun" or "interesting" classes in their First and Sophomore years often have problems with distribution requirements and major requirements down the road.

Mt. Holyoke Student Activities + Social Life

No one, other than the athletes, goes to athletic events.
The only good parties are at UMASS Amherst.
It is almost impossible for strait girls to find dates unless they go to Hampshire, Amherst College, or UMASS.

Long lasting friendships are usually made in the dorms or in smaller, discussion-based, classes.

Mt. Holyoke Naked Truth

Many students do not care about hygiene. It is sometimes quite disgusting.

There are many sexual assaults on campus. Most of the time, the parents are not aware of this.

There was a rumor that Mt Holyoke has one of the highest suicide rates in the country.
