Quinnipiac: The Big Picture
What's the best thing about QU?- I think the best thing about my school is the school itself. It's beautiful, quiet, charming, safe. I love running around campus and admiring the natural beauty of the school.
Name one thing you'd change?- The big thing I would change is that QU accepts a lot of people, and it gets a little tight freshman year living with 3 other girls. The housing sucks cuz there are more students than there are spots, but they are building more dorms.
- I think QU is just right (a little on the small side of just right). It is growing and expanding. But I like the small environment, its safe, and its nice to see people you know when you're walking down dorm road (not so fun when you see people you dont want to see). Looking back on my 4 years @ QU- I think the school is just right.
How do people react when you tell them you go to QU?- "Quin..... what?''
Where do you spend most of your time on campus?- class or library (im a bio major)
College town?- not quite! QU is in Hamden which a residential area, but since Southern CT State is right there too its becoming more of a college town and eventually (like it or not) I think it will be. But QU students spend most of their weekends in New Haven which has all the bars and clubs. Shuttles from QU take student there. So its nice to have a small town next to the school.
What's your opinion of QU administration- ummm...... like anything QU is a business, but student opinion matters and SGA works hard to bring about positive change.
What was the biggest recent controversy on campus- a girl died last year crossing the road on Whitney Ave. drunk during MayWeekend (the big drinking weekend for QU students) so the school took away May Weekend and replaced it with Spirit Week that happend in the Winter. QU got very strict on underage drinking in the 4 years I was at QU.
Is there a lot of school pride?-hmm... only during Men's Ice Hockey Games!! especially vs. Ivys.....We Beat Yale twice! and Harvard! and Princeton Sucks! Besides hockey... no one has school spirit.
Is there anything unusual about QU? besides the fact that QU is located across a national park, It is said that Irama (freshman dorm) is haunted!
What's one experience you'll always remember?- Greek Life at QU! we're not like all other schools, Greek life is small and we are heavily watched so nothing crazy happens, but we do have a lot of fun doing stuff on campus to raise money... like Kickball and Frisbee fest, and Hall Wars from freshman are soo much fun.
What are the most frequent student complaints?
- its too crowded in dorms!
- Library gets really packed!
- Caf. is overpriced
Quinnipiac Academic Life
Do prof. know your name? YES! classes are small, no TAs, and prof def. know you name even after you stop being in their class.
Tell us about your fav. class? Im a science major and I was fortunate to have some great prof. I liked Organic Chemistry with Smith and I would take it again, Dr. Clark's Cell Physiology class is great too but really hard.
Least Fav. Physics! (i just dont get it!)
How often do student study: If you're in science you dont leave the lib, and if you're not, you will only know where the lib is during midterms and finals.
Class participation is common and in many classes you get graded on it
Do QU student have intellectual conversations outside class? NO!
Are student competitive? YES
My major is Microbiology and there is not a lot of classes offered. Programs are very developed and its a great school for nursing, PT, PA, OT, AT, but not for other sciences. It is hard to find good teachers.
Do you spend time with prof. outside of class? sometimes, all prof have office hours, and they are there and they do answer questions, but there is also the learning center.
QU academic requirements are okay but for my major I wish they would be revised and more classes added and a larger variety of classes.
Education is geared toward getting a job in the labs but in classes its more learning for learning sake.
Quinnipiac's Student Body
racial- its a white school. people who are not white stand like a sore thumb. Minoraties tend to aggregate together and hang out together. But majority are open to differences, very few are closed minded. I feel like minoraties make it a bigger deal than others do!
Religious- we finally got a rabbi! but student religion is not a big thing. the school is predominately Catholic. This department- the school has a lot go work to do in, cuz the school doesn't keep Kosher for passover so it does put a strain on everyday life during Passover.
A lot of kids are well off, but I know a lot more that have to work to pay for the school, and who have a lot of loans and such. So everyone here IS NOT rich, that is a common stereotype.
What kind of a student would feel out of place? if you dont like preppy, you will feel out of place. If you don't wear a northface and uggs, you will feel out of place. Think... Abercrombie if you're not that.... you will feel out of place. Or if you're not guido, you'll feel out of place. I did! Personality, no matter what, be accepting and understanding, and you'll be fine. I felt out of place till I joined my sorority and met amazing girls who were like me. It is possible to find your group; its just hard not be affected by the majority of kids.
Most girls wear (90%)- Abercrombie, Uggs, Northface, flip-flops, so low, and PINK sweats. Some wear pj to class.... not acceptable! It seems like everyone wears the same exact things just in different colors.
Do different types of student inteact? IDK, but I think so, it depends on the person.
the 4 table:
1. The lacrosse or baseball (any sport) eating after practice together
the rest are groups of friends/ roomies from the dorms.
Greek guys tend to sit together and maybe sometime girls, but not soo much. People sit with their friends/ roomies.
Where are most QU students from: Mass. Long Island, North Jersey
financially you would think everyone is well off but most students have loans or workstudy. People assume but no one talk about how they are getting through school.
WE are an apathetic campus! We dont care, we are too busy with out own lives and studies, I know I dont have time.
Quinnipiac Student Activities + Social Life
most popular: Greek life for girls is popular, rush is great and a lot of girls join. Our Greek life is growing. organizations: SGA and SPB for those who like getting involved in planning things, sports are sports they are always popular but we are D1! and rugby team is the unofficial (its not sponsored by QU) but its all QU guys, and it is very popular with guys in QU.
Athletic events- ONLY men's ice hockey games!
guest speaker- we had ex-pres. Carter here and that drew a big crowd
Theater- NOT SO MUCH, we only now got a program and we dont have a nice big theater here to set productions so they occur in New Haven. but thats only popular with theater people.
Dating- 60-40 girls and the ratio gets worst..... you decide! It sucks!!!! Majority of girls here are beautiful, and the guys have a large selection to choose from and they take advantage of that.
How did I meet my closest friends- through my sorority
If you're awake at 2am on a tuesday, what r you doing? Studying at the lib because it's open 24/7
what traditions happen? currently none cuz they took away our May Weekend and replaced it with Spirit Week. Sig Ep started Hall Wars for freshman, and that happens every fall (its a physical competition among all freshman halls; it's a day long event and the winner gets bragging rights) GREEK WEEK (big for Greeks- a week of competition).
How often do people party- every thurs., fri, and sat. night. If you're a senior, you start on a wed.
We have 3 sororities and 2 fraternities, its popular and a lot of fun but you dont need to be in one to have a social life. I wasn't in 1 for my first 2 years at QU and I think that the better years of my QU experience was when I was in my sorority. We do more than just drink, in fact its harder for us because of the many negative stereotypes. And the school is really strict and severe with us, so we do more events that are open to the school such as our philanthropy events and sisterhood events that dont involve drinking.
What did you do last weekend- im a senior (aka 21), I went out to the bars.
What can you do on sat night that doesn't involve drinking- SPB and QUAD (QU after dark) make many events that are designed to give an alternative to going out to TOADs but very few attend cuz they are at TOADS.
What do you do off campus? go out, go out to eat, go shopping in New Haven, and go tanning, and go get my nails done, and out to buy food. There are a lot of businesses in the area and the shuttles drop you off in Hamden and in New Haven.
