This public research university in Seattle, Washington, is no stranger to the benefits of social media. In 2010 a parody video of Lady Gaga's Poker Face by UW's librarians went viral and today has achieved almost a million views, entertaining hundreds of thousands while promoting its brand. On Facebook the university has almost six times as many 'likes' as they have enrolled students, and its followers are so passionate that their Alumni Association is able to advertise available tickets for events using social media and
expect to sell out within hours.
Robert M. Mason, a professor at the Information School, founded the Social Media Lab at UW. According to their website (SoMeLab.net) the project was started as an interdisciplinary space for collaborating on projects and sharing what we're learning about these tools, their interactions, and their consequences. Currently they are working on the development of analytic tools to trace the dynamic flow of [the Occupy Wall Street] movement's energy and information across geography and time.
