Samford: The Big Picture
Samford is the perfect school for someone who wants to live inside a bubble. Not a lot of students know what is going on in the world. Its small enough to where you know a few people heading to class but not to where people are all up in your business. Samford isn't very well known outside the southeast; most people think I'm refering to Stanford. B'ham itself isn't that bad... although it can be pretty sketchy at night. People probably complain the most about visitation.
Samford Academic Life
The student to professor ratio is great. My largest class is about 16. I thought Samford's core cirriculum was going to be really boring & repititive, but I've enjoyed going. The professors are good -- some better than others. Professors are generally there for you when you need them. Most of my classes have involved more discussions and less tests/papers. The graphic design department is a good but (extremely) tough one. Not for anyone that thinks its an easy, MRS major.
Samford's Student Body
Samford's population is a very religious one. You can find some sort of bible study or service going on every day of the week. An overwhelming majority are right-wingers... voicing your opinion as a moderate/liberal can be hard. Plenty of fake people. Put up large fronts and act all holy... except, you know, I've seen you out drinking your weight in alcohol and hooking up with that cute Sigma Nu. Please, Samford students, get real. If you don't fit into the Samford "mold," get out.
Samford Student Activities + Social Life
Like before, religious groups are huge. The party scene is minimal, but there is one. Extremely underground. 90% of Samford's population are closet drinkers. Drinking can occur in the dorms of frat houses, nearby colleges, or clubs that serve to the underage. Everything is kept hush, hush. A typical Saturday night would consist of a dinner and a movie. Can get boring - REAL fast. Unless you're in athletics or greek, be prepared to not meet the opposite sex. Visitation and single sexed dorms don't help. Samford has athletics.. but not very good ones, and people tend to not get that excited about them. People will go camping, watch movies, or volunteer for some organization on weekends.
