Samford: The Big Picture
The best thing about Samford is the opportunity to be involved in activites that will challenge your faith. There are all kinds of mission opportunities, althought at times I feel like Samford focuses on serving people instead of building relationships with people through service. I think that's a drawback from the same category.
Samford for the most part tries to uphold the Christian values it was founded on. Therefore, there a rukes such as no visitation after 10pm (it's earlier for freshmen), no parties whatsoever on campus, and of course no drinking on campus. Administration has deleted two channels "BET" and "MTV" from the cable we recieve in our rooms because they did not uphold our values. Don't worry though, we still have "VH1" "OXYGEN" and "E".
Some things that would make Samford a bit better is if we became more diverse. There are 325 black students on campus out of the 4000 students that attend Samford. IF our campus becomes more diverse that's more opportunity to be exposed to people who are not like you and learn from them.
Also greek like seems to be a BIG deal on campus. Teachers will be very lax in the classroom during "rush". Also just as big is STEP SING. It's too much detail to go into, but teachers also become lax during that time of the year.
As far as school pride is concerned, I'd say the students are not very prideful in their school. Samford is th type of school where the library will be packed on the night of a football game. There's not a big support for the athletes that attend Samford.
Samford Academic Life
Academics here at Samford is excellent. The classes are small and if you miss class your professor will definitely know. Samford students are definitely competitve which can be annoying at times. I think you see the competitive spirit more as you get into your major classes your junior and senior year. It seems like students study ALL the time! Pretty much, the majority of students take academics very seriously and intellectual conversations take place all the time outside of class.
The academic requirements are challenging for me coming from an innner city public high school. It's not a cake walk by no means. Nursing is AMAZINg. The requirements are high, the work load is tough and the students are extremely competitve, but in the end it's all worth it. To get a degree from Samford means a lot to the people in this community and around this area.
Samford's Student Body
Most Samford students probably come from a middle class to upper class background. Politics is a big deal an I'd say for the most part most students are politically aware. I've actually seen several cars painted "Obama sucks" "Vote for McCain". It can be intense.
With me being a minority, I've had some racial experiences. I don't necessarily think it came from an evil heart. It's just a sort of ignorace to other races. By no means does this serve as a generalization of the entire population. From my own experience, I've had a few comments and situations happen that weren't the most comfortable. I think it stems from a lack of knowledge about those who are not like you.
If I could classify Samford into 4 groups you'd have:
The Greeks: They're always dressed up it seems. They're always going to balls, and they are intense about Durby Days. Step sing is the big showdown for each sorority and fraternity. It's a pretty BIG deal.
The Athletes: Most of the athletes stick together. Each sport hangs with their teammates. It can be generalized that they bring the "life" to campus an make life a bit more interesting and fun.
The regular students: People who are not greek or athletes. They come in call shapes and sizes. What else can I say?
The Nursing Majors: SOmeone get them some ATIVAN!!!! They are in a class of their own. I can say this because I am apart of this group.
Samford Student Activities + Social Life
I can say that Samford Social life is not as wild as other unversities from what I hear. Their are alot of opportunites to have good clean wholesome fun.
