Samford: The Big Picture
Samford is an amazing school. Even though it's kind of small, it's definitely not too small. You know lots of people and always see a familiar smiling face, but there are many people you won't know. The school is beautiful. When you come on campus you automatically feel welcome and apart of the Samford family. It's very relational at Samford and then not at the same time. People always ask how you are but sometimes it's just politeness, however, there re a ton of great caring people. There is always something to get involved with but in the Fall especially, people head to other schools. Our athletics are lacking so that's why a lot of people leave on the weekends. The Spring is better and most people aren't leaving as much. If you go to Samford, you love it. There is a lot of school pride. Samford is in Birmingham, AL which has about 5 colleges so it's kind of a college town but not really at all. Even though there are lots of colleges around, it's a big city in itself and it's not some big party college town. Birmingham is amazing though. It has so many things going on all the time and it has the big city feel and the small town feel especially since Samford is in Homewood. There are lots of great coffee shops!
Samford Academic Life
The academics are great with professors who truly care. Professors know your name and you can talk to them about anything. They are very willing to help whenever needed and really reach out to their students oftentimes hosting them in their homes for meals. The small class size is really helpful and it allows you to get to know your peers and the professors. The academics are challenging. The education is job focused if that's what you're focused on. It's a very mission oriented school and so it depends where your heart is and your personal focus. Students are very academic at Samford and work hard. Students are pretty competitive but not in an extreme unhealthy way. Intellectual conversations out of class happen daily. I know all of my professors personally. My least favorite class is InfoSystems and Technology. Intermediate Microeconomics is my favorite probably since I'm an econ major. The Brock School of Business is acredited and is stellar. It is very challenging, encouraging, and advanced. There are many opportunities for students to get involved and they offer scholarships.
Samford's Student Body
There is not much diversity at Samford which sucks. A lot of people seem to be sheltered so it's sad and funny at the same time. Most students are very politically aware and are more right-wing or in the middle. Most come from predominantly wealthy families. Students talk about what they learn a lot. It's not in a nerdy or excessive way but we share what we're learning. A lot of what we share is what God's teaching us in life or what we're struggling with, or at least with best friends. People love to go to lectures and extend their knowledge. In the caf, as we call it, you have the jocks, the Sigma Chis, the Pi Kapps, the sorority girls, the theater people, and then kind of the rest. Some girls get really dressed up for class but mainly it's casual. Most people don't just roll out of bed though. People actually get ready for class. Most students are from Alabama, Georgia, Tennessee, Florida, and Texas.
Samford Student Activities + Social Life
Fraternities and sororities are prevalent on campus but you don't have to rush if you don't want. They don't run the school or anything. You can definitely go through Samford without Greek life. People party but you have to find them. It's not an open thing nor do most people party. Lots of people go out of town, movies, dinner, and just hang out. We're a pretty chill group but we study a lot. People study on the weekends often. There are also those who go hiking, camping, rock climbing, and what not. There are a lot of opportunities around Birmingham that you can get plugged into. Most people keep their doors locked if they're not there. I wouldn't suggest just leaving everything open to all. Theater and guest speakers are very popular as are concerts. Workplay is in Birmingham and we go there all the time for concerts. I go to coffee shops with people and talk a ton. Like I said, we're very relational. However, the girl to guy ratio is 3 to 1 so there aren't many guys which gets frustrating. A lot of them are kind of pansies anyway. If I'm awake on a Tuesday at 2am it's because I'm studying. I met all of my best friends on my hall freshman year. We have deferred rush and so I lived in the Freshman dorm and we all met and have been friends ever since. You also don't have to live in the sorority houses which is nice. People tend to be morning people. Yes we sleep in, but it's definitely more of a get up and get the day started kind of school rather than a late night party hard school.
Samford Naked Truth
I love Samford and wouldn't have gone anywhere else. The school is great and Birmingham is so fun. The main draw back is lack of guys and lack of diversity. Other than that, I've been very challenged while at Samford. I think Samford is this secret. People don't really know about it or how great it is. Samford has a lot to offer in every way.
