WPI: The Big Picture
WPI is a good size for someone who wants the chance to work of real-world problems in a smaller environment. It's not so large that you are just another number, and it's not so small that there is nothing going on. The projects program allows students to go abroad to one of the many WPI-sponsored project centers around the world to work on a real-life problem with a group of students. With project centers in Asia, Australia, Europe, North America, and Africa there is something for everyone. There are so many opportunities here.
WPI is located in Worcester, MA. The city itself is okay. There are things to do, but it's not stellar. However, Boston is only a short train ride away (about an hour and a half). In Boston there are so many things to do - pro sports, clubs, concerts - and it's an easy day trip on the weekend or a day off.
WPI Academic Life
WPI is a good place to go if you don't want to be just another student at a large university. The classes are taught by professors (not TAs). They have office hours for students to go see them individually if necessary. Many professors will take the time to get to know you. Many students participate in class, and there isn't a lot of competition between students. Actually, group work is encouraged and many students work together to solve problems and help each other with assignments. The senior project allows students to get in the lab and do something real with one on one help from professors. WPI prepares people for life in the real world, and gives graduates the knowledge needed to enter the workforce, or attend graduate / med school.
WPI's Student Body
WPI is a very interesting group of people. There are many different groups on campus with many different interests. People come from diverse backgrounds with everything from the inner city to the country, different races and religions, different sexual preferences, etc. Everyone can find a group of people that to hang out with, study with, and generally have fun with. There are cheerleaders and football players, nerds and popular kids, loners and uber-involved students. Everyone can find something here.
WPI Student Activities + Social Life
There is definitely no shortage of activities for anyone on campus. Greek life (fraternities and sororities) is popular among many students, but not required by any means. There are ways to become involved with the campus with Student Alumni Society, Student Government, and Admissions. There are groups for video game development and Magic/WOW/etc. Varisty and intramural sports, outing club, many music groups (vocal and instrumental, as well as African drumming), academic clubs, political groups, ethnic groups, human-rights groups - there is no shortage of things to do on campus. And if there isn't a group already created for a specific interest, students can start their own groups!
Students on the WPI campus are generally social people. Dorm room doors are open, people have homework parties and hang out in each other's rooms. There are parties, campus activities, comedians, and things to do in Worcester like clubs and concerts. Greek life is prominent for those who want if, but definitely not required. Typically you can find people up late hanging out and watching movies. WPI is a social, involved, fun campus with no shortage of things to do and people to hang out with.
WPI Naked Truth
WPI is a great university with a diverse student body, opportunities to study abroad, and a wealth of activities both on and off campus. WPI is focused on undergraduate education and student involvement, and I would recommend it for anyone interested in math, science, and engineering.
