Michael Crow succeeded Lattie Coor in 2002 to become ASU’s 16th president. Crow graduated from Iowa State University in 1977 with a BA in political science and environmental studies, then went on to get his doctorate degree from Syracuse in 1985. After a stint at Iowa State, Crow served as Executive Vice Provost at ASU. In addition to his work in higher education, Crow has served as an advisor to the US Department of State and the Department of Commerce. He is also a fellow of the National Academy of Public Administration.
Crow’s vision as president has been to turn ASU into a “New American University.” Believing that research is a catalyst for change, Crow seeks to enhance the university’s research capabilities. To this end, the administration is planning to build a million-square-foot biomedical structure.
Crow’s reputation as a micromanager makes him a somewhat polarizing figure among students and faculty members.
