What are some stereotypes about Brown students?

Stereotype: everyone's a really chilled-out hippie Harvard reject who smokes pot and never does any homework unless they bought their way in, in which case they're probably really rich, famous, or mean. Either way, they still go to the crazy sex parties.

Are the stereotypes accurate?

The people here are disappointingly more normal than people make it seem.

Brown: The Big Picture

Brown is awesome because it ENABLES YOU TO DO WHATEVER YOU WANT TO DO AND ACCOMPLISH YOUR DREAMS. If you don't succeed at Brown, you messed up.

Brown Academic Life

I feel like the open curriculum's lack of academic requirements is perfectly balanced - you are required to take a certain set of courses to satisfy a concentration (unless you create your own, which is totally possible but actually a lot more work), but at the same time you can easily complete your requirements really early and take whatever courses you want (unless you're pre-med or engineering, those have a lot of requirements). The range of courses available is great, and everyone stresses out about making their schedules, but it's usually about how many awesome things they want to take. Classes are generally pretty small, I like it. Also YOU CAN TAKE ANYTHING PASS-FAIL. This is a great thing. It is also crazily underutilized even by the vast majority of Brown students. Most people I know have taken, max, like TWO courses pass-fail. But that was their choice. Me, I take everything pass-fail.

Brown's Student Body

Everyone is very accepting. Are you human? YOU WILL FIT IN! People wear whatever the fuck they want to wear. Generally people have lots of money. If you don't have lots of money, people will probably have more money than you. They'll also be really really chill about it and not bring it up ever because nobody gives a shit. People are pretty liberal. But there are a lot of angry conservatives too.

Brown Student Activities + Social Life

The clubs are great, there are a lot of them, and they're really really fun. People are pretty friendly. THERE IS NO DATING SCENE. If you don't illegally imbibe substances, you don't get to hook up with the wasted strangers, and if you don't hook up with the wasted strangers, then you're either one of the cute little Asian people in sub-free (awkwardly holding hands with one of the other ones!) or utterly alone. I met my closest friends because they live across the hall. We smoke pot pretty much EVERY DAY. We are by far not alone, but we are still clearly in the minority there. Most people wait until Thursday to start the weekend, but once it starts, IT FUCKING STARTS. Last weekend...I can't remember anything about last weekend. It was 4/20. Duh.

Brown Naked Truth

Oftentimes I feel like I hate college because I have really stupid work to do or I hate the social scene (everybody drinks!) but I'm a crazy art student who didn't want to go to college in the first place and honestly, I WOULD NOT SURVIVE ANYWHERE ELSE. This is by far the best college I could have asked for.

In Closing ...
