Greek life is pretty interesting on campus. The greeks have a lot of fun, but the do not completely dominate campus life. Our Greeks are pretty unique. They party through the week, but they are some of the smartest people on campus. Most of the fun on campus happens in the dorms, especially the Freshman dorms. Its really the first bonding experiences and thats how you develop so many memories and lifelong friendships. We have a lot of Convocations with notable guest speakers, sometimes notable alum such as Nikki Giovanni or Matthew Knowles. These are great networking opportunities too. Not many girls talk to guys on campus, simply because we are one big family and the guys are more like brothers. However there are a few power couples on campus. Most people have intercollegiate relationships with people at Vanderbilt or TSU. If you are looking for the big party school, this is not the institution. Don't get me wrong, Fiskites party hard, but alot of the students are more Afrocentric and like other forms of entertainment like concerts, bowling, salsa dancing, open mics, movies, or house parties. Just because there aren't parties on campus every week doesn't mean Fiskites don't go to one of the several nightclubs in the area. It IS a college town afterall!

There are not too many actives that happen on this campus but it's not boring. For the most part most of our students spend their time studying or hanging out with friends. There aren't too many parties on campus but some party during the weekend. We have a saying here at Fisk "we party hard, we stay up late, but most of all we graduate". It's not uncommon to walk down the hall and just walk into someone's room or to find a door unlocked. If you're awake at 2 in the morning on a Tuesday you're probably in the computer lab just "shooting the breeze". Fraternities and Sororities play a big role on campus but if you don't want to pledge it's not a big deal.

The Big Picture consists of Fisk being the breeding ground for African American scholars. This is true in every aspect. Fisk attracts some of the brightest minds the world has to offer. The size of the school is relatively small which is conducive to the family atmosphere that Fisk is known for. Some may think that Fisk is not a family, but family is what you make it. People generally call me a nerd or think that I am high class when I tell them I go to Fisk. That is not true. I am laid-back, quiet, and for the most part conservative (not in the political sense). The biggest recent controversy is the financial situation that Fisk is in. With the help of God, we will make it through. As W. E. B. Du Bois, one of Fisk's many distinguished alumnus, says we are "sons and daughters ever on the alter." As a result of the financial situation, school spirit and pride are at an all time low. Certain students in the student body are organizing to bring it up.

Generally, this is not true. However, there are some Fiskites who like to fall into that stereotype.

When you come to Fisk and expect to be surrounded by young adults, think again. This school has some of the most conceited, self-centered, gossiping people you will ever meet. Everyone is in a clique and everyone talks about everybodys business like no on has a life. Be prepared for some drama.

The student body although it's a HBCU it's very diverse. It's almost as if everyone has some type of talent rather it be musical, artistic etc... everyone here seems to have a talent. We're very outspoken and truthful. No one in particular stands out as far as outcast go. It's not uncommon for students to wear suits or heels (to dress up) to class, if you decide to wear your pajamas to class you may get a lot of strange looks. We're very liberal when it comes to politics but traditional at times. We're just very diverse.

My favorite class so far has been Intro. to Women Studies. My favorite because it teaches me about helps me appreciate the freedoms I take advantage of today. My least favorite are the core classes. I don't like them because they can be repetitive. However, I have learned to appreciate them. The students are not as competitive at Fisk. We are more like a family and tend to help each other out with classes we know are difficult for everybody. I am an English major which requires me to read and write on a regular basis. I like my major because I do not find myself as stressed about as the people that are science majors. Because Fisk is a liberal arts institution learning is geared toward learning for ones' own sake but getting a job is also emphasized when having private meetings with advisors.

the academics at fisk are the best thing about the school. All of the classes in the CORE cirriculum have been so beneficial in teaching me about black history. Fisk has a really good academics program with plenty of interesting classes related to almost anything.

Due to the small size, not only to the professors know your name, they know your potential. The freshman core classes are designed to help students find a black identity by exposing them to black culture and literature that may have been "overlooked" during their early education. It's pretty cool because you get to discuss contemporary topics like Hip Hop in class. Most of the classes are really small, so class participation is necessary and vital. Actually, in most classes the students lead the discussion. Its usually not a situation where the teacher just lectures and students take notes. The teacher is involved in the discussion but its more like a conversation. However, in these types of classes, its important to be prepared for class and the teacher knows that you didn't read because you can't contribute to the discussion. Most of the classes are so interesting that its not unusual to find students having intellectual conversations in the cafeteria or dorms about a topic that was brought up in class. Fisk's education system really teaches you HOW to think, so that you can apply your knowledge and skills to any discipline, job, or situation. Most of Fisk's students go to graduate school. Several of the professors are Fiskites, so they know and appreciate the legacy and traditions of the school and seek to uphold them. They are understanding because they've been there and they know when a student is pledging a fraternity/sorority or not to give a major assignment due during Homecoming Week.
