Hobart and William Smith Colleges  -  HWS

HWS Information

HWS History

Hobart College was founded in 1822 by an Episcopal bishop. Classes began in Geneva Hall, the first university building, which is still in use today. Toward the end of the century the school was looking bleakly at bankruptcy when philanthropist William Smith showed up. He was set on creating a college for women, so the William Smith School for Women opened in 1908 and became a coordinate institution to Hobart. The two schools shared a few facilities, but for the most part were completely separate until the men and women began to join in common classes during the late 1930s. In 1943 the two joined corporately, becoming The Colleges of the Seneca.

More about HWS

HWS Dorms

All students are required to live on campus at Hobart and William Smith as part of the “Residential Education.” The colleges offer traditional residence halls, fraternities, townhouses, and theme houses so students can combat the monotony of a four year living situation. Housing options can be coed, single-sex, or substance free, and rooms are generally laid out in doubles, triples, or quads. The theme houses host students of common interest, with homes for performing arts students, writers, honors students, and even those with an interest in wildlife conservation.
