Lake Forest History

Sometimes the town comes before the college, or vice versa. But Reverend Robert W. Patterson's grand vision involved building both a New England-style town and liberal arts-style college on the highest bluff looking out over Lake Michigan just north of Chicago. He banded together with the local Presbyterian community and enlisted the help of architect Almerin Hotchkiss to turn the vision into a reality. Construction began in 1857, the first classes were held in 1860, and by the mid-1860s, the college and town were completed. It was first dubbed "Lind University," after a donor who gave $80,000 for the school's start-up, but the name was soon changed to "Lake Forest University."

In 1876, Mary Eveline Smith Farwell spearheaded the launch of the Lake Forest College, the undergraduate, liberal arts arm of the university. Over the next few decades, the school shifted its focus from the wide-ranging professional and graduate offerings of the larger university to concentrate on building the core liberal-arts offerings of the College. In 1960, a former member of the Williams College community, William Graham Cole, took over at Lake Forest and brought a distinctly East Coast faculty and curriculum with him to Chicago. In 1965, the school's name was officially changed to Lake Forest College.
