What are some stereotypes about MIT students?

Intense, Rigorous, Science/Engineering focused, not athletic, not social, heavy drinking

Are the stereotypes accurate?

Some are: MIT is an intense place as far as workload, work ethic, and grading is concerned. Most students are in the sciences and engineering, but nearly all are involved with sports (IM, club, and intercollegiate), dance (performance, partner, etc.), drama, etc. MIT also has the best economics department, and top 10 business and political science programs. Its a very well-rounded school.
The students are very supportive of each other and is a very friendly and social place. I always went out to dinner/party/movie/hanging out every weekend, and ate dinner in the dorm dining hall with my group of friends every week-night. There is a subgroup that drinks heavily, but that's really a very small part of the fraternity life and seems no worse than nearby colleges like Harvard and BU.

MIT: The Big Picture

Best thing: Undergraduate research opportunities program (UROP): some of the most important, high powered research in the world goes on at MIT and even as a freshman you can get involved and work closely with world-famous professors. UROP gives you $$$ and/or credit to do research and all professors are open and encouraging to undergrads working in their labs.
College town: In Boston right across the river from Back Bay, the best, most fun part of Boston with shopping, restaurants, etc.

MIT Academic Life

Big lecture classes during freshman year, then smaller. No grad students teaching classes. Even recitations are often taught by professors (my physics recitation was taught by a Nobel laureate!). MIT is a very unique place where the smartest students I've ever met are always trying to solve new problems. Lunch conversations turn to theoretical physics debates, then to a recent Red Sox game, and finally to new movies. Students are social, with wide interests that span the academic to the popular.

In Closing ...

What's the worst thing about MIT?
Easy to get wrapped up on you work, because there is a lot of it (that intense thing works both ways...).

What's the best thing about MIT?
All your classmates are brilliant and all have extremely varied interests. They make for great friends, even at 3 AM while working on problem sets.
