OWU: The Big Picture

The best thing about OWU is the atmosphere. Even though OWU is in a large city, the university is still small enough that you will not feel intimidated and make new friends with students and faculty quickly. Everyone will work with you to make sure that you are as comfortable as you can possibly be while on campus. The one thing that I would change about OWU is the accessibility of the dorms and some of the academic buildings to make them more accessible to the physically impaired. When I tell people that I'm an OWU student, I always get a positive reaction from them because they have heard positive things about the school from my parents.

I usually spend most of my time in my room studying or in the Student Union center. The residence hall that I live in is known as the honors dorm. It has many things that other residence halls do not have including study rooms and a gymnasium. The Student Union Center is where our mailroom, food court, bakery, and some campus offices are located. The food court and bakery are great places to grab a meal or snack as well as catch up with friends and meet new ones.

OWU is definitely a college town. Since it is in the city of Delaware, there are always new places to go and something to do so you are never bored. School spirit is evident here. You will always see students going to some sporting event, or wearing OWU apparel.

OWU's Administration is very friendly. They will do everything they can to help you and ensure your success as a student at their school. They will listen to any ideas, comments, and suggestions you may have. One thing that is unusual about OWU is that even though it is a liberal arts college, you still have the option to design your own major/minor if they do not have one that interests you.

One experience I will always remember is taking the campus tour. I had my own tour with my mom and a tour guide so I felt like I saw everything I wanted to see, and had every question answered. When I was touring the campus, I pictured myself as a student there and saw my dreams of graduating from OWU become a reality.

OWU Academic Life

The academics here are quite rigorous and challenging, but managable too. Teachers will work with you to make sure you know the material and succeed. Class size is small, so you will get a chance to interact with your teachers and other students as well as get the individual attention you deserve. Class participation is common, so you will have plenty of opportunities to make your voice be heard. The students are quite competitive when it comes to their grades and sports, so they are often studying or participating in a sports related event.

The psychology department is quite good here at OWU. The department is one of the top 20 in the country. Two aspects about the department that are unique are that the department offers neuroscience as a possible major, and that one of the staff members used to be a health psychologist before they started teaching at OWU, so the teachers come from a wide variety of backgrounds. My favorite course so far has been adolescent psychology because I like learning about children and want to work with them as a clinical psychologist in the future. You will have plenty of opportunities to do reasearch with faculty as well as get involved in department activities such as the Psychology student board.

OWU's Student Body

Nobody will feel out of place at OWU. Students are very friendly and willing to help you if you ask for it. It is not uncommon to see people you know every day while walking across campus, so everyone knows who you are. The student body is also very diverse. Fifty world countries are represented, so you will have the opportunity to learn about many different cultures as well as have many new experiences. Students are very accepting of others and will interact with many different people every day.

OWU Student Activities + Social Life

Community service in general is huge at OWU. Almost everyone is involved in a community service organization. Greek life is very important as well. It is not uncommon for one of the fraternities to be having a party or social function. Most of my friends are either in a sorority or fraternity. I was involved in the Buckeye Valley Reads program as a sophomore this year. Buckeye Valley Reads is a program that has OWU students working with third graders to help them improve their reading skills. Students in dorms usually leave their doors open, so it is easy to get to know everyone in your residence hall.

Athletic events, guest speakers, theater and music department events are quite common around campus. There is at least one of these going on every week or weekend, so you never know what to expect. No day or weekend is typical. I met most my friends at freshman orientation or through taking classes with them. The Little Brown Jug, a horse racing event is a huge event that occurs in Delaware every year and is very popular for college students on campus.
