UNIGO SUMMARY
Rhodes College is a small Southern liberal arts school that's becoming a national higher-ed destination. Located in Memphis, Tennessee, the picturesque campus is situated mid-city, right across from Overton Park and the Memphis Zoo, and gives students access to the city's famous music, barbecue, and lively nightlife. On campus, Rhodes is in the midst of redefining its liberal arts curriculum, adding more core requirements to give students a more broad, well-rounded educational experience. The student body is small, and so are classes, which allow easy access to hands-on experiences and faculty interaction. Students describe professors as the kind who "LOVE helping students." The most popular major is biology, but students find there are plenty of lower-key departments to take advantage of.
Clubs and student organizations are popular--according to one student, "A student who isn't interested in becoming involved on campus in any capacity would probably feel out of place at Rhodes. There aren't any official statistics on this, but I would be willing to bet that everyone at Rhodes is involved in at least one extracurricular activity." A majority of students choose to get off-campus with volunteer or intern positions in Memphis. But on-campus is just as nice--while housing is limited, it's also known for being quite comfy (as comfy as dorms can be, that is). Campus is hopping, and students are often forced to choose between attending lectures, performances, meetings, and parties on any given day.
Nearly half the campus goes Greek, and frats and sororities are at the epicenter of Rhodes' weekend scene. The prevalent stereotype is that all Rhodes students are preppy, white, and wealthy, but students say their actual experiences are much more diverse. The one stereotype they do find truth in is the sometimes claustrophobic closeness of the student body. With only 1,700 students in the entire college, it often feels like everyone knows everyone (and who they're dating). The non-Greek half often chooses to party at the houses, but they also flock to the city's nearby cultural and social attractions. Having a car is critical, though--if you're going to explore the city, bring your own wheels (or make friends with someone who did).
