What are some stereotypes about Rhodes students?

Stereotypes about Rhodes students vary. On the positive side, most people seem to view Rhodes students as smart and highly motivated, constantly busy and involved around campus and the Memphis community. The negative stereotypes usually include that all Rhodes students are very wealthy, somewhat snobby, and drive nicer cars than most of the professors.

Are the stereotypes accurate?

As with any stereotype, there is some degree of truth to it. Many students come from financially stable families and do drive decent cars. It does hold true that almost every student is very involved--whether interning, playing sports, volunteering, or serving in student government, students at Rhodes enjoy staying busy.

Rhodes: The Big Picture

The best thing about Rhodes is definitely the professors. The professors vary in their degree of difficulty but the ones that push you as a student are always willing to offer the extra support needed to get you to the next level. Rhodes is also designed as an academically friendly campus--Barret library is a great resource and is stocked with comfy chairs, sofas, and Starbucks (as well as a Christmas tree during the holidays) which makes it much easier to spend a lot of time there.

Rhodes Academic Life

I am an English literature major at Rhodes and an Art History minor--I absolutely love my classes. With the field I am in, most of my classes are geared towards learning for the sake of learning, but also helps with "real-world" skills like communication, writing, critical thinking, and problem solving. Participation counts as a percentage of your grade in most classes, which leads to lively discussions and high attendance levels, even for 8 AM classes.

Rhodes's Student Body

The Rhodes student body is very inclusive and friendly. I feel comfortable among many different groups of people, as almost everyone makes an effort to reach out and interact with others. It's not unusual to greet people you don't know while walking around campus, which leads to a tight-knit community.

Rhodes Student Activities + Social Life

At Rhodes, over 50% of students are involved in greek life--it's a really good idea to rush here because you meet so many people. Some of the parties are open but greeks usually don't attend open parties as heavily as non-greeks. I'm involved in a sorority and have enjoyed the experience.

Rites of Spring and Homecoming are probably the biggest campus-wide events--Homecoming is in the fall and Rites is in the Spring. During Rites of Spring, Rhodes hosts several big-name bands for a weekend of music. During this weekend, Rhodes also hosts an even for local children called Rites to Play, where students work carnival style booths for the kids (there are also huge inflatable toys as well). It all makes for a great weekend.

Rhodes Naked Truth

I love Rhodes and would choose it again without a second thought.

In Closing ...

What's the worst thing about Rhodes?
The worst thing about Rhodes is that there is always so much to do that you can't always be involved with everything you are interested in or care about.

What's the best thing about Rhodes?
The best things about Rhodes are the professors, the engaging classes, the beautiful campus, and the opportunity to live in castle-like dorms.
