St. Olaf Information

St. Olaf History

Minnesota pioneers opened St. Olaf's in 1874 as a prep academy to train local students (mostly of Norwegian descent) for careers in, among other things, business, politics, and the Lutheran church. It was named St. Olaf, after the "patron saint and eternal king" of Norway, Olav II Haraldsson. In 1886, the academy added a college component, and in 1890, the school officially changed its name to St. Olaf College.

In the 1900s, St. Olaf absorbed two nearby seminaries (United Church Seminary and Red Wing Seminary) also associated with the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America. To this day, St. Olaf is renowned for its program in Scandinavian studies, as well as its choir and instrumental performing groups.
