United States Air Force Academy Summary

What's this?
While it is often overlooked by more traditional rankings systems, the United States Air Force Academy nevertheless provides a first-class education for students who are ready to be physically and academically challenged on their way to becoming officers in the U.S. Air Force.
The application process is one of the most rigorous in the country, involving a fitness and medical exam, nomination from a U.S. Congressional representative, and strict academic standards. For the roughly 1,400 who gain admission, the work only gets tougher: Cadets are expected to complete an extensive core curriculum, receive Air Force military officer training, compete in several sports on either an intramural or intercollegiate level, pass several annual physical-fitness tests, and undergo intensive character and leadership development training. However, the type of student who thrives at the USAFA is the kind who enjoys a challenge, and, in exchange for the promise of varying levels of military service post-graduation, students pay no tuition and receive a small stipend while enrolled. The school is rich with tradition and pride, and students are expected to engage on many levels with the school's academic, military, and athletic offerings. Students are almost equally divided between engineering/science and social science/humanities, although the gender balance tips heavily in favor of the gents (80 percent men versus 20 percent women). While students' strict moral standards have slipped in public scandals in the past (most notably a handful of cheating incidents, as well as allegations of gender bias), the USAFA is proud of its legacy as both a first-class academic and military training school for some of the most motivated young people in the country.
