UNIGO SUMMARY

Midshipmen at the United States Merchant Marine Academy don’t simply walk away from graduation with a diploma. After four years here, they have a topnotch education, sea experience, and an obligation to serve their country. The midshipmen (students) at USMMA follow a strict schedule Monday through Friday. With group agendas planned to the minute, students are able to balance the rigorous course load with reveille, inspections, colors formations, classes, athletics, and extracurriculars. The student body is tight knit, as the midshipmen unite in camaraderie over the daily mandatory duties in close quarters. The Academy mandates a “Sea Year” that is actually two separate periods during the sophomore and junior years where students spend time working aboard US flag merchant vessels. Midshipmen can put their knowledge in action as they travel across foreign waters and gain marine experience and memories. Though tuition is funded by the government (and midshipmen even get paid during Sea Year) students have to invest a hefty chunk of time post-graduation to serve as officers of flagged merchant vessels, members of the armed forces, or employees in the maritime industry.
