United States Naval Academy Summary
What's this?
The Naval Academy’s motto is "ex scientia tridens," which translates to "from knowledge, seapower."
Since 1845, it has educated and commissioned officers of the United States Navy and Marine Corps in Annapolis, Maryland. The institution was founded as the Naval School by Secretary of the Navy George Bancroft, and it is known by many names, including “Annapolis,” "The Academy," "The Boat School," and "Canoe U." Navy’s campus is on the banks of the Severn River and Chesapeake Bay. To be admitted, candidates must be between seventeen and 23 years old, unmarried with no children, and “of good moral character.” There is a rigorous application process that includes a physical aptitude test. Students at the Naval Academy are called Midshipmen, after their military rank. Upon graduation, most Naval Academy Midshipmen are commissioned as Ensigns in the Navy or Second Lieutenants in the Marine Corps and serve at least five years after their commissioning. Foreign midshipmen are commissioned into the armed forces of their native countries. The school’s sports teams are referred to most commonly as Navy, but they are technically “The Midshipmen.” They participate in the NCAA's Division I-A as an independent (i.e., not a member of any conference) in football and in the NCAA Division I-level Patriot League in a number of other sports. Faculty at the Naval Academy is roughly evenly divided between civilian professors and military instructors.
