What are some stereotypes about UNT students?

We're are a big music school so alot of people think that we're all nerdy and bandish. My friends from back home came to visit me once and were pretty wierded out by how liberal UNT and Denton. We are a very diverse school and people tend to see all of the different cultures and ethnicities present.

Are the stereotypes accurate?

Nerdy and bandish, no, I'm a psychology major and have absolutely no instrumental abilities. Yeah we are a bit liberal here at North Texas but I'm always proud to talk about my firm conservative values. It can be interesting being a conservative in a school of liberals but theres always great conversation and alot of shared ideas, views and values. We embrace diversity at North Texas.

UNT: The Big Picture

When I first started looking at colleges UNT was my last choice, I actually had never even heard of the school. I was dead set on another school but at the last minute decided on UNT. I was sure I was going to hate it and planned on transferring come 2008's fall semester. North Texas is one of those schools that isn't to big or to small, its just the right size. Because we are a big commuter school those of us that live on campus are a pretty tight knit group. Pride day Fridays are AMAZING, walking to class Friday afternoons the sea of green covering campus is great. We may not win every football game but the Mean Green Pride is outstanding. Post game at Fry Street keeps everything fun win or lose. Our faculty and staff is one of a kind, of the 5 schools I toured in high school North Texas was the only one that took time to make sure I had what I needed to succeed and have a great experience during college. At least once a semester our President has a big open discussion with all the students. She sits and listens to our opinions and concerns. This year one thing we as the student body wanted to see changed was the lack of bike racks around campus. Those opinions were voiced, our president heard them and come Spring semester we had new and more bike racks.

UNT Academic Life

At UNT we have a great student teacher ratio. Freshman classes are always a bit bigger than upper level and major specific classes. Nevertheless all the big classes I've been in still have a lot of class participation. I loved my social science classes like psychology and philosophy, they really challenged in a fun and interesting way. Math has never been a strong point for me but even with my struggles I learned a lot and had a great time doing so, both my Algebra and Statistics professors helped me outside of class time and helped make sure I understood the material. I took several upper level (Junior and Senior level) courses and had a great time, the challenge was nice and the professors helpful. Because of our diversity there is always great conversation going on in class, around campus and even off campus when your just hanging out with friends. Are we a competitive school? we have a program at UNT called TAMS, the Texas Academy of Math a Science, it basically allows high school students to attend and live at North Texas, its tough having high school students compete with you for that 4.0 but it makes you strive for perfection. I took and African Music and Movement class this year, it helped open my eyes to a different style of dance and a whole new culture, we performed at several schools, festivals and even for classes and concerts here at UNT. The College of Arts and Sciences hosts my department, psychology; its one of the largest colleges on campus and toughest departments. Our Psych professors are tough but fair, I've learned so much from the men and women that make up the department and am glad to be studying with and under them. I have no doubt that everything I am learning will prepare me for an outstanding career in Psychology.

UNT's Student Body

UNT is very diverse and, as I gay, multi-racial, republican I feel 100% accepted. We have a blast with everyone regardless of who they are, where they come from or what they do. Cultural diversity is evident daily, each day you'll see people walking around in their traditional/religious clothing. Diversity is almost a requirement for being a student at North Texas. We are like big family at North Texas, we come from different backgrounds, different socio-economical brackets, different city, states and countries. But somehow we still come to the agreement and understand that it is those differences that make us unique, North Texas.

UNT Student Activities + Social Life

We are proud of our over 300 student based organizations ranging from Greek life to fencing and paint balling. I am a member of the second largest organization on campus, the Residents Hall Association serving as the Vice President of my hall. The atmosphere on campus is generally friendly, I hardly ever locked my door and never had anything go missing or get messed with. Athletics is a big part of life at North Texas there is hardly a game that goes by that I or my friends aren't in attendance. As far as nightlife is concerned theres a lot to don in Denton, whether it's hookha a Kush or clubbing at the Drink, theres always something to do in. And with Dallas and Ft. Worth right down I-35 there is ALWAYS a club or nice dinner out.

In Closing ...
